That's strange, the last time I ran the download version I seem to remember seeing some sort of a progress indicator, or at least a window that said it was running or about to run. I mean, the Windows Update one runs silently but I don't think that the standalone one is supposed to.
Hopefully it's something benign and not malware that's preventing the tool from running.
Might want to do a spyware scan just to be safe:

(the free trial version is fine) |

John still happening manually don't see anything after running and still comes up on windows update stays at 0% progress. I run Panda 2009 and spybot all the time. Also have ran Malwarebyte and super antispyware at least twice a week PC is running smooth and fast Duo Core 3.33 4 megs of ram built by me. I don't get it may have to call Microsoft but I don't think they get it either. _________________ JCH 9/7

What I would do in that case is to open up the log file in notepad. It should be c:\windows\debug\mrt.log and it might give you a clue as to what's going on. I'm not on Windows right now so I can't tell you exactly what you should be looking for, but most likely you will see entries from months past that check out OK, and entries from this month that end in some kind of an error.
Then again, it could be running correctly, and the problem is elsewhere. But I know that if you run MRT.exe directly it should open up a window. Make sure you are running it as an administrator.
If your problem is actually with Windows Update, which is what it's starting to sound like, the first thing to check is whether or not the Automatic Update service and the Background Intelligent Transfer service are running and set to "automatic". You do can check the services by hitting start and then putting services.msc in the search bar.
This sounds like it might help:

If you do decide to call Microsoft, be aware that they're not supposed to charge you for issues related to security patches. |
