I just got thru hearing Joe at the ISGA.

You are right....you have to "see" him in costume to appreciate his act!

He really breaks the monotony of the show. He's one of the many reasons I go to the conventions. Never a dull moment with Joe on stage.

Joe is not only a great steel player but is a natural born comedian as well. He ought to go far in the entertainment business.

Joe, in my opinion is about the greatest overall steel guitar player of all. All of his talents have not yet been tapped.

Best show ever, I think. The place was packed from Thursday night on.
Mitsuo Fuji presented me with a video of the recent Japanese show with Joe in attendance. Before the show, Mitsuo sent Joe a tape of a popular Japanese song and asked him to play it on his part of the program. Joe went one better and sang it in Japanese and played American back-up on his steel as only he can do. What a talent.

I never tire of his playing or his act he needs to be at every show there is, He does enterain you with playing and comedy He's great at both.....................

I call Joe the "twisted genius of steel guitar". Others call him the "Enfant Terrible". Either way, I think he has an extra brain somewhere. I heard him playing in the Sierra room for a long time and I could swear he was just making that stuff up.

Bill, I agree with you. Joe can maintain eye contact with the crowd and rip off stuff that most players wish they could do with 100 percent concentration. Joe can make his funny faces and act silly and at the same time be playing some incredible stuff. If he ever really concentrated on the steel guitar I think it would be scarey. I too think he is as good a player as there is. I think I have as much admiration for Joe's talents as any player I have seen.

His diversity is amazing. He can go from "Jonny B. Goode" to The Mills Brothers "Cab Driver". Uncanny.........

Joe has all your guys (and gals) fooled - - that Sierra is really a "player steel guitar" (as in player piano) Now you know how he can play so good without ever looking at his fretboard.

I saw Joe a few years back in the Sierra room and, yes, he was more than entertaining. The thing I remember most was when he would hear strains of "Way to Survive" floating in from the main concert room, and update the count. How many players now, how many times had we heard that...?
But then, he launched into a medley of "Way to Survive". Yes, a medley. The tune over and over again, first straight, then boogie, then pop, then Straus waltz, then hiphop, then reggae, then heavy metal, whatever.
I must say some in the small audience watched and listened with a blank stare. I had to pick myself up off the floor in the aisle and wipe the tears of laughter from my eyes.

And underneath all of that act, is a considerate,caring ,good hearted,person.I am glad to know something of that side of Joe as well as his showmanship side.

He has made me feel like a good friend.
