When I'm on the WWW, and I want to save the page to my desktop, I do the only thing I know how to do.
In FF, hit FILE/SAVE PAGE AS - and send it to, for me, the desktop.
But here's the rub. Real annoying.
If I want to send this "saved" page to some friend from my desktop reference, it goes through email OK, but the recieving party cannot open it. It doesn't even look like a usual URL.
In fact it's sending my recipient to my desktop, which is why the URL address looks F^&%*%-Up.
Internet Explorer doesn't have this ridiculous, drive-me-out-of-my-mind problem.
But I hate IE; and now am starting to hate FF, too.
These idiots keep saying they're making it better and better. Hey - I think not.
What's up with this???

Print it to a PDF file instead. That puts all of the content into one file that anyone can open on any computer.

But...why was it simply so easier to just send a web/desk file in the past?
And how hard is it to put a website into a PDF file?
This is got to hurt. I don't know how to do this stuff.
Expiring minds want to know.

Send link? Nope - same thing.
Try for CryingOutLoud.
Go to FF. Send a website to your desktop; then go to you're email. Then put it on as ATTACHMENT. Send it to yourself, and check it out!
See if you can open it.
But lest we forget, I'm running ruinous VISTA.

That's exactly what I do. "Save Page As..."
But when I open up the saved page on my desktop, (for instance, the one on The Columbus Symphony with the Paulknack speech) and then try to "Send Link", my email opens with the link that looks like this:
file:///C:/MonsonMan/Desktop/Musicians%20of%20the%Columbus%Symphony.html
I sent the email to myself and could not open up the link. It wasn't even in the usual blue color.

A web page is a collection of files, not just one html file. If you go to, for example, http://b0b.com/index.html and Save As... to the desktop, you'll see two new items on your desktop: index.html and a folder named index_files.
When you open index.html it will look in the index_files folder for all of the pictures and other stuff. If you email index.html without the index_files folder, none of the stuff will be there.

I think they even ask you in what format you want to 'save as'; I've saved in the past with both the FF icon and the accompanying folder. You have to save it as 'webpage complete, not just .HTML
No wonder nothing went through.

You can't successfully email a link to something on your desktop, because your desktop is not a web server. Any link that starts with "file:" won't work on another computer. Those links are local to your machine's file system.
You can email a link to a web site, or email files as attachments from your computer. You can't email a link to a file that's on your computer.

So, to send the link on the desktop as an attachment, I would still have to save it from the web as "web page complete", right?

Yes, and you have to send both the HTML file and the entire folder.
Why do you want to send web pages instead of links?

I just sent myself that Karl Paulknack speech from a 'saved as' website with both the HTML and the Folder.
The text came through just fine, but pictures were blanked-out.
The only reason I would want to send a weblink from my Desktop is that when I'm writing an email to someone about this or that and I have it saved on my desktop, it seems easier to just put it on the email as an attachment. Then too, even if I'm not writing an email and I think someone may want to see this - well, there it is right in front of me, without having to go hunt it down again on the web.
Thought it would be just easy to send it from the Desktop. But now that I see isn't that easy, I'll have to change my evil ways.

You could just save all of your favorite link addresses in a text file. Or bookmark them in Firefox.
Personally, I hate it when people send me big files instead of just a link to the same thing on the internet.

Do you mean like wordpad or notepad? So from a website, would you paste the URL in the text file.
Or use 'Send Link' to the text file.
This is all kind of new to me. I hear ya on BOOKMARKS, too. But BMs can quickly get overwhelmed; unless you make up special folders, I guess.
I just never paid a lot of attention to this stuff, until those Desktop web 'sends' would not work (open).
As mentioned before, this was never a problem using IE.
Yeah - big files. That last email to myself was really cluttered up with a lot of other stuff from the website. I figured out why no pictures came through. I would have had to attach each individual one from that folder to the email. I'm gettin' the hang here a little.

If you're using Apple Mail you can grab the URL's favicon with your mouse and drag it to the Mail icon in the Dock and it will create a new email with the URL in the body of the message. I don't know if that works with any other OS/mail app combination.
Another way is to press (Windows version) Ctrl and L to select the browser's address bar. Then Ctrl and C to copy it. Then open Notepad or an email or whatever else you want to paste it into. Then Ctrl and V to paste it in. You can do all this in about 5 seconds after you get it down.
You don't need all the graphics etc., just the URL.

Chip, if you really want to send people sites as files, the best way is to do what Bob said originally, which is to make a PDF file. To do that, you would download and install this:
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/pdfcreator/PDFCreator-0_9_7_setup.exe
You will then have an extra printer on your system called PDFCreator. When you are at the web page, hit print and pick the PDFCreator printer like you would any other printer. But instead of printing, it will ask you to pick a folder and then it will put a PDF file there. Then just add PDF as an attachment to your email.
But yeah I think most people would rather just get the URL, which you can copy from your address bar and paste into the email. Keyboard shortcuts: in Firefox hit Ctrl+L to select the address bar (L for "location bar"), Ctrl+C to copy, and in the email hit Ctrl+V to paste (I think because "v" is next to "c").
"Send link" is obviously the right way but it will not work if your default email program setting got changed. It got changed on my Mac recently and so far I've been too lazy to set it back  |

Thanks, too, Cal and John. When I get some time later, I'm going to try out both ways.
Both sound easy enough, but with me, you never know.
I got rid of Eudora a while back and now use Mozilla Thunderbird (it works pretty well and is very close in appearance to the old Eudora).

Both PDF and Windows CTRL & L routine have worked just like you guys said. Not one hitch in the giddy-up.
It's easy when someone shows you. But I would never, ever have found this stuff out on my own. It's there, but it ain't there. That is what's annoying.
How do you find out about this stuff? Thank God for this Forum.
You can rap up this one b0b, if you feel so inclined.
