I'm looking to get a couple of old JBL's for tonal experimentation. What are the different kinds out there? What kind of power can they handle, including making them distort a bit? What manufacturers are making comparable 12" guitar speakers today?
I have been poking around the web a bit, reading about Harvey Gerst, the Allmans loading their Marshall cabinets with JBL's, checking prices on Ebay, etc. But I know there's some gurus on this board who could wisen up this chump. Thanks! |

Just do a search (in "ELECTRONICS") using JBL or D-130. This stuff has been pretty well hashed out here many times. |

Thanks, Donnie, I added this forum to my lengthy reading list.
Roger, I have used an EV speaker before in a buddy's amp and it was great. I'll see what model that is.
Jerry, that's a good synopsis.
I think I'll get a D120F as they seem available on Ebay and locally. And I've seen the 123's on Ebay too, for a lower powered amp might be a good choice. But I do want to find what current Eminence or Weber will distort in the same way, which to me fattens the mid and sizzles a little at the top.
Like most other folks here, I've been using 15" JBL's and BW's for pedal steel. But I am liking the 12" more now even for "clean" sounds, as I try to evolve my tone...less boomy, more meaty. 12"-ers seem to sit in the stage mix better for me, too. |

I would take a look at Weber Speaker(Ted Weber) He makes speakers as good as if not better than the ones you speak of and a lot less expensive and can be had in ceramic or Alinco if memory serve me right. I believe the website is WeberSpeakers.com _________________ "Steel players are like fine wine, we get better with age" |

I think for steel, the K-120's are the best. They sound just like the D series but can take a bigger hit, wattage-wise. Everybody dumpes on the E series because they are ceramic, but I've had real good luck with a 4ohm E-130-tons of power handling capability and great sound.
The Webers are good, and very reasonable money-wise but they really don't sound as complex as a real JBL.
I agree that two 12's is a great set-up for pedal steel, I go back and forth between that and a single 15. |
