One of the small music stores has an older (not sure on exact age) Fender Amp called "The Twin". They want $700. Anyone know or have experience with this amp? I know it's heavy. Would this make a good Steel Guitar Amp?

Thanks

They are very good steel amps if it's not the red knob version. They have several models out there and as the guys say below, the red knob models are not voiced for steel and not very sought after.
I was assuming it was the twin reverb or twin amp.

I expect this is either black with red knobs, or the later "Blackface" equivalent. This is a very different animal than a Twin Reverb. Do a search for old threads on the "Evil Twin" and I think you'll find it gets very mixed reviews.

And yes, you're correct, it's ungodly heavy.

I had one of the red knob "The Twin" fender amps. Had it for several years, Great for tele and strat, not so good with steel. Very heavy, lots of honking mid range. I don't have it anymore, traded with one of my guitar playing friends for a Twin Reverb. Now we are both happy. The "The Twin" has a half power switch that makes it great for overdriven six strings. Just my opinion.

My memory isn't the greatest, but I'm sure the amp doesn't have red knobs. That would have jumped out at me. Especially after looking a photos of "The Twin" with red knobs. It has a black grill cloth and a metal tag in the upper right corner of the Grill cloth that says "The Twin". Normal "Fender" in the lower left.

After reading old post on "Evil Twin", I don't think I'm interested. I also think the price is high, but everything is high at this store.

Thanks, Denny

There are two different amps; the regular twin and then the "evil twin" with the red knobs.
There is even a re-issure twin.
I picked this one up a short time ago.
I use a re-issue Fender spring reverb with it.

After the one with the black grill and red knobs, they came up with another one with a black face and regular Fender cosmetics, with a few control changes. This was still a turkey in sheep's clothing, and not much different than the red knob job. Twin Reverb: good. "The Twin": perhaps not so much.

My recommendation is to run screaming from the "The Twin" amp. They can sound ok, not spectacular, and they're really just too heavy and expensive when you could find something 100 times better for that price, like a real Twin Reverb from the mid/early '70s. A friend had a "The Twin" amp, and it caused a lot of technical/reliability headaches, was difficult and expensive to service, and never quite got that sweet and open sound of a true Fender Twin amp.

You can't go by a metal tag or the grill cloth color. The name of the amp should be screened right on the front panel, if it's a Fender. If you can't identify it by the name, get the model number off the back panel. That said, the words "The Twin" normally signify a 2-12 amp with no reverb.

Begging to differ, I'm pretty sure I've never seen an Evil "The Twin" that didn't have reverb. Tweeds and reissues say "Twin-Amp".

How about Peavey Session 500? It's a 250 watt at 4 ohm or 350 watt at 2 ohm. A friend of mine has this am and said he would be willing to part with it. It's being used as a guitar amp now. I looked on Harmony Central reviews and can't find the Session 500.

Pretty good reputation, and one of the few amps famed for being heavier than an Evil Twin.

The weight doesn't bother me. It wouldn't leave the house. I'd leave it in my Family/Music Room. Smile

If you can find a "Twin Reverb II" they are really nice. Lots of clean headroom & you can still find some pretty good deals on them...if you look hard enough!!!
