My National New Yorker had a strange rattle when certain notes were played. I eventually tracked it down to the tuners where the tuning "knob" was vibrating on the shaft of the tuner. Various attempts to stop the vibration failed, the final attempt was to try and crimp the tuner knob on to the shaft more tightly which resulted in the tuner knob shattering into many pieces. It looked like it was made out of the cheapest, most porous pot metal I've ever seen! So, I decided to get replacement tuners. I found a Kluson 3 on a plate replacement kit on Amazon. It included 2 x 3 on a plate sets of tuners, 6 ferrules and new screws. It turned out that the ferrules were slightly larger than the originals which required some drilling (gasp!) of the original holes. I proceeded very carefully, one size drill at a time, in 1/64th inch increments. The resulting hole was a little too big so I used teflon tape of the kind used on pipes to make a snug fit and take care of any vibration. Below are some pictures of the problem and the final solution. The original dust covers fit over the new Klusons even though the new Klusons had individual dust covers on each gear. No more vibration and nice, shiny tuners! I don't like that it's not 100% original any longer but the old problem detracted from the play-ability of the New Yorker.

Looks great !
I bought my New Yorker new, in 1950. After only a few months, a couple of the tuners started slipping. And as you recently did, I tossed the originals & replaced them ! They are still on there with no problems...
I rarely play it these days, after being hooked on Bakelites & frypans, but I have C#m tuning on it, to play around with !  |
