| He starts the tune on the A6th neck, jumps down to get some Speedy West licks on a neck tuned to either E6th or Speedy's tuning then goes to the outer neck which is the Leon McAuliffe bass tuning which I believe is A6th tuned an octave lower than standard A6th. Correct me if I'm wrong, please. Most Stringmaster Quads have a different nut on the outer neck with wider grooves to accomodate the heavier guage strings needed for that tuning. Many modern players have swapped out those nuts with the conventional one to avoid string buzzing. The bass tuning was something of a failed experiment; difficult to play with good intonation. Noel Boggs took it off his early Quad and substituted his E13th tuning. I'd be interested in knowing if the pickups are wound a bit differently on that outer neck. My 1960 Quad's outer neck is by far the richest sounding neck on my guitar. |
