What do Yo Yo Ma, John Williams, and Paco De Lucia all have in common?

Somebody enlighten me. I always thought shredding was someone playing their ax at breakneck speeds and cramming as many notes together as humanly possible.

This "shred" does not seem to be that. Rather someone just noodling around and not really playing anything that I recognize as organized. I see no point.

Please tell me the purpose so I am up to speed.

They all ripped off , Er, I mean "draw inspiration from" classical composers? Just kidding. Well, not really regarding John Williams.

Nice shreds, Susan. The audio for the John Williams shred comes from an actual album by the Portsmith Sinfonia. I believe that as a member you get kicked out for being caught practicing your instrument.

Here is another classic from the album which includes "Hall of the Mountain King", "Waltz of the Flowers", Beethoven symphony 5 and "William Tell Overture". This stuff is funny unless you have rehearsed junior school bands. Oh Well

I'd forgotten how great that Paco performance was... my all-time favorite is "Santana Shreds", the cameraman does a great job of capturing the individual musician's "expression."
