I thought for sure I would wake this morning to find that someone had written about this already. I'm talking about the guy sitting at the steel playing a banjo with Dierks Bently last night at Daytona. When I saw that I laughed and told my wife that someone on the forum would be upset about it. He did play the steel at the last of the song. I couldn't hear banjo or steel. Who is the player? |

No Basil - it doesn't mute the sound completely, it just cuts down the volume by about 50%. Ideal for practicing. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. Defenition of perfect pitch.
Any steel guitarist who can throw a Banjo down a well, without touching the sides.
If you desire a Banjo sound on the steel, try using the back of a plastic combe,it sounds just as bad as the real thing. |

When that beautiful little grand daughter of Bob's learns Foggy Mountain Breakdown,[His son in law is teaching it to her]I bet he will soften up some on banjo pickers. Just to make it clear, I'm not dissing banjo or banjo players. I think it's great for a person to be able to play more than one instrument. But, nobody answered my question about who the player is for Dierks. |

The banjo, steel player is my good friend
Tim Sergent who plays a Jackson Steel Guitar.
Tim is a very multi talented musician that can play anything he sets his mind to.
I am proud of you Tim. Keep up the good work.

I unashamedly play the banjo; 5-string, 5-string long-neck, 6-string, 12-string, 5+1 string, and also its derivative, the cumbus. I also play a mountain dulcimer with a banjo pot.
To my mind, the banjo is as much part of country music as any other instrument.

I just don't get it! Am I missing something? There seems to be more banjo haters now than there used to be including people who are into country music. Has this turned into a trend? |

Pedal steelers have this innate dislike for anyone who plays twice as fast as they can. |

I think the bagpipes have more in common with the steel guitar than the banjo does. The steel guitar is an instrument with a lot of sustain, whereas the banjo has thin notes that die away fast. The bagpipes have as much sustain as you can puff into the bag or work the bellows with your arm or foot, depending on which type of bagpipes.
I've never heard a duet between bagpipes and steel. I'll have to try it. I have a chanter, but not a full set of pipes. |
