I am sitting at the computer listening to another fantastic recording of real traditional 60's-style Texas country music, shuffles and western swing. The singer is Dugg Collins, a disc jockey long in love with this style of music, and Dugg can deliver the goods, lemme tell y'all.
It's called Sounds Like Texas. Good title. 
This new CD was produced by Forumite Jim Loessberg, and features many of my good friends, musical constituents, and multi-instrumentalists, all playing their asses off! I'm talking Bobby Flores (fiddle and guitar), Randy Reinhard (steel and piano), Jim L. himself (steel and drums), Justin Trevino (rhythm guitar), Kevin Smith and Bob Moore (yes, THE Bob Moore) on bass, and Floyd Domino (piano).
The 14 songs are mostly standards, with a couple of good Dugg Collins originals done in the right way. Examples: Hang Your Head in Shame, Careless Hands, Dreams of A Dreamer, If She Could See Me Now, Walk Me to the Door, Roly Poly, etc. Y'all get the picture... great stuff.
If you liked Justin Trevino's latest record Travelin' Singin' Man, I ga-ron-tee you will really go bonkers over this new one by Dugg.
Jim Loessberg is not only a world-class picker on steel (as well as drums, though he probably winces when I say it ) but he's also become a fine producer of trad. country. Order this thing from Jim at startexrecords@aol.com. You will not be sorry, trust me.
ADDENDUM: Most of the steel is by Randy the Rein-hearted, Jim is on one or two C6 cuts. Bobby Flores plays no steel on this record, but (as Jimmy used to say) he could have.

Herb,
On the recent "T.O. Tour" of Kansas,I had the pleasure of backing-up Dugg,2 shows a day,for 3 days. That's my kinda music,& Dugg did it GREAT!! Here's somethin' I just found out. I was "strollin' " through the Opryland Hotel with,fellow forumite from Germany,Roland "SmallCap" Grothe,& his daughter,Jennifer, & in the hotel,they have the "Country Deejay H.O.F. Well,we're checkin' 'em all out &,lo & behold,we spot Dugg's plaque up there w/ the rest of the legends. Well,ya coulda knocked me over w/ a feather. Here I was backing up a member of the deejay hof & didn't even know it. WOW! To deejays,that's the equivelant of being in the CMHOF.

Herb,
Thanks a million for the nice words about Dugg's CD. It was a real pleasure working with Dugg and such a group of fine musicians.
For too long now I have heard the complaint that there is no real Country Music being recorded these days. At our new record label, Startex Records, Justin Trevino and I are comitted to making Country records that sound Country, that is to say that they are heavy on steel and fiddle, upright bass and drums that don't sound like a Guns And Roses album.
We have another CD scheduled for release in a couple of weeks called "Frenchie Burke's Dance Album". Again, this will feature Country (and a little Texas-Cajun) Music that should please the most discriminations Country Music and Western Sing lover.

I'm listening to the CD right now and Herb is right.This is the real stuff.

Jim,
Glad to hear that you are producing some hip country recordings. I forced myself to listen to about an hour of commercial country today. Heard very little steel. Mostly songs that only seemed to accomodate the steeler playing a "pedals down" major chord while rocking on and off the 1st pedal. Also heard several songs featuring guitar players pumping "power chord" eigth note rhythm. I thought Foreiner beat that to death in the late 70's / early 80's.

I'm glad you asked. There are several ways so far to buy Dugg's CD. Malcom Kirby at Discount String Warehouse has them (270 886-2954), the Ernest Tubb Record Shop in Ft. Worth has them (817 624-8449).
You can also get them directly from me if you like. E-mail me at startexrecords@aol.com for ordering information or see the link in a previous post.
They should be in several stores around Central Texas soon and they are already in Yesterday's Discs in Wichita, Kansas.
I am so sure you will like this CD that I'll cheerfully refund your money if you don't.

Jim gave me a copy of this album the other night after a GREAT gig at Ginny's Little Longhorn in Austin,TX. I listened to it on the way home and I was blown away! I can't get enough....BTW...the gig was with Justin Trevino on bass/vocals, Jim on steel, Levi Mullen on drums, and myself on fiddle. What a great time I had! Couldn't get enough of Jim's pickin...lookin forward to the next one June 26th!

Well I got my Copy of the CD from my Neighbor Jim Loessberg today(Thanks Jim).
I have three words first> "OH MY GOSH!!!!"
Now I have alot more to say.
This CD brought a HUGE smile to my face. This is Classic Country and Texas shuffle and some Western Swing thrown in; "At it's Best".
Mr. Flores plays super fiddle and super guitar parts.
As for the Steel guitar> "WOW" what a great sound and playing and I have to relay something my best friend Gary Carpenter just told me when I asked him what he thought.
Gary Says to me: "Ricky I've known and been friends with Jim Loessberg for 25 or so years; and he always continues to amaze me". Then he goes to say: "I have played and heard countless solos on Roly Poly; But that Loessberg plays the best solo I have ever heard on that song">"period".
Folks if you don't have this CD; then you really don't have the very best of the best.
Dugg Collins is a "Singers, Singer". He just absolutely Belts it out with confidence and style much like Ray Price; Johnny Bush; Darrel McCall; but all his own; and the Production of this CD is soooooooooo perfect and the rendition of the 60's and early 70's classic shuffle sound and texture; could not be captured by anyone else other than my friend and Neighbor and our brother Forumite> Jim Loessberg.
And of course the style of drum played can't be played the way Loessberg plays; unless you live and breath this classic style.
Get it> Buy it> jump mountains for it> run very fast right now and receive for yourself a timeless new CD> by Dugg Collins, produced by Jim Loessberg.
Ok I'm done for now; but believe me that this is not the last word you will hear from me on this awesome masterpiece

| WOW! While I was in Wichita Falls at the Legends of Western Swing Festival, I got a copy of this CD from the man himself-Jim Loessberg. It is great, great, great, and I cant add anything more to what has already been said, but it is a "must have" for every country music lovers cd library !! The sound of the steel is out front and the tone, style, and playing is wonderful !! |
