I just wanted to share this old photograph of Western Swing legend Spade Cooley and his band (including Tex Williams) that was given to my mother in law by her mother years ago. All members of the band signed their name on the photo. After reading a few websites, I believe this photo was most likely taken in 1942. I told her that she should go on PBS's Antiques Roadshow to see what it is valued at. Let me know what you think of it, Thanks.

3 guitars
3 fiddles
2 accordians
2 doghouse basses
1 banjo
1 ??? (behind middle fiddle)
1 girl singer

ho hum--just another typical band configuration.

But seriously--that's some unusual stuff! Twin squeeze box? Twin bass? Cool.

Is the hidden horn a steel?

-----I'm just picking up some great names---Smokie Okie, Pedro de Paul....absolutely can't make out the long name above the mystery picker.

Dick Roberts, the banjo player, aslo played a multi-chord Steel with the band. I actually saw this band at the Venice Pier Ballroom about 1943. My Parents took me down as a Guest of Spade Cooley. I worked summer vacation at Jeffries Machine Shop where Spade and some of his band worked a half a day doing defense work which provided them with a draft defferment. I told Spade I had been learning steel and he invited me a my parents to the Dance. (I was the clean-up kid at the machine shop).

The drummer is Warren Penniman, the guy between Eddie Bennett and Sonny Olivera. The bass player on the left is Rusty Cline. Smokey Okie is Smokey Rogers.

I have a violin the Spade and the band all autographed in Dec. 1942, and most of these guys were still in the band at that time.

I had a feeling that a few of you would be able to shed some light on this band. Thanks for the feedback. Herb, what a keepsake that violin is!
