" A FANTASTIC HAPPENING IN COUNTRY MUSIC
By Lorraine Simon
The Escobar Steel Guitar Circle Jam was held on May 6 at the American Legion Beanpost in Weymouth. It was a fabulous day, listening to steel guitarists from all over Mass., Rhode Island, and one from New Hampshire. It was organized and coordinated by Manny Escobar and Elaine Ellis.
Steel guitarists attending included Manny Escobar, Eddie Cunningham, Earle Leblanc, Sam Gibson, Vinnie Doyle, Tony Palmer, Joe Ferri, John Jiacovelli, Frankie Steel, Jimbo Wilson, Roger Trahan, Harry Teachman, Donnie Deon, Sam White, and Steve Todd.
It was amazing to hear as many as 13 steels playing at once. Jimmy Cordeiro played drums all day to accompany the steels. Jimbo Wilson played rhythm guitar after he played his steel. Elaine Ellis and Ronnie Deon played bass, while Cis Higgins played acoustic guitar.
The steel players sat in a circle and each player was spotlighted for 15 minute segments. Many shared how they started playing steel, highlights of their careers, favorite effects, etc. Others chose to play music for their 15 minute segment. Most did a combination of both. It was interesting to hear about their experiences with steel guitar music as well as to hear them perform great steel guitar music. The Beanpost was a perfect place for the Steel Guitar Circle Jam. There was also food available.
After more than four hours of wonderful steel guitar music, Homer Adams, Cindy Lane, and Anne Marie Collins joined Elaine Ellis and Jimmy Cordeiro for our dancing pleasure. Many steel players stayed and played on with the band, It was a wonderful time."
many thanks to lorraine for taking a special interest in writing this article; as this was her first encounter reporting such an event. |
