In case you're interested in this line of work, a quick perusal of 315 ads currently on eBay under "pedal steel" (musical instruments) yielded 90 copies of the DVD "Pedal Steel Licks for Guitar" by Paul Rodgers.

That's 28.6% of the ads in that category, FWIW.

Anything with "pedal steel" in the title will come up in your search. It's not the fault of the people selling that instruction video.

Well, just maybe so many people want to hear steely licks, and so many guitarists want to learn to make "that" sound, that those of us who can provide the real deal have a more secure future. One can hope!

Herb, Don't encourage them!! Some of them are already driving us nuts trying to duplicate the steel sound. Can't be done authentically with only 6 or 7 strings anyway. Wink

these people aggrivate me with their wannabee pedal steel sound. It's always the same old sound, they have stereo-typed "our" sound to always resolve back the the I chord with a bend from a sustained chord to a major chord. I know this one guy and he's a great friend of mine, but I can't play with him, because he does the same thing, after every turn-a-round he does,,,,,,,,,,I can always anticipate a tasteless imitation of a 1960's pedal steel sound. There is a big difference between copping licks and trying to sound like a steel. If I want to sound like a steel, I have a ten string MSA E9th.

When I play six-string I don't bend strings very much, but like to steal single string licks from steel players, sometimes.

When the Troubadors played twin harmonies, who was copying who? Steel players have long copped horn and piano lines for their C6th bag of tricks.

I once tried to mention this to a well-known steel player in Austin, but he assumed I was trying to sound like a steel. Before I could explain that this was not my intention, he chopped me off at the knees and walked away. So much for smart school!

I did however, listen to him play C6th in a swing band setting for two hours and he played great!

Well it's right up there with breast implants and imitation cheese - nobody's happy with what they got.

For me, not necessary, because I play with a very good steel player. My current objective is to play guitar licks with a modicum of proficiency.
