In working on my speed picking I often find passages where my fingers are faster than my feet. I'm looking for any advice on improving my "pedaling" speed. An example might be a series of triplets where you hit the 5th string with the A pedal down, then release the A pedal and then hit the 6th string. The trick at speed is to have the pedal all the way down as you strike the 5th string and fully released as you hit the 6th string. Obviously there is the issue of how much travel one has in any pedal move. I've shortened all mine up to where I don't really have a lot of "feel" left. I'm already well aware that ANOTHER 30 years of practice is the ultimate answer but just wondering if anybody has any thoughts/tips/tricks. |

When I first started playing pedal steel, I used to listen to Paul Franklin and say to myself..... How does he push those pedals up and down so fast? Then I got one of his advanced instructional tapes. One of the examples started out with B pedal down and A pedal half way down. The idea is to get the sound of a pedal slur without having to push the pedal all the way down and all the way up. When you are playing a fast passage, this trick can help. |

Wasn't it Jimmy Day, while listening to a "speed merchant", who said something like, "I wish I could play that fast, and then I wouldn't". Oh Well.

The C 6th hi C-to-B lever(or equivvy on some other tunings)is a good case in point...somewhere along
the line I must´ve developed a half-and-half habit,
without thinking about it...in fast runs,passing
thru´ the C-B,I always engage the lever half-ways
and slant the bar to complete the half-tone lower ;
another force-of-habit thing,amongst MANY...McUtsi |

Perhaps you rely too much on the pedals. In the example you give, bar movement would be faster than pedals. |
