What is this, and is it even worth messing with?

It's a National Chicagoan lap steel from between 1948 and 1961. The price could probably be knocked down with a bit of bickering, but it's in the ballpark for a lap steel of that type.

Cass,

I had one once, it was O.K.. These days there are some new ones made that would sound as good. I'd pass if it were me. JMO

I just bought a new Eastwood "Airline" steel guitar(a National Rocket 110 reissue type guitar) from Elderly Instruments in Lansing this morning for $350- shipped, and a three year warranty.

The Gold Tones are in about the same price range and sound great! They look like the 50's Oahu Diana.

I own one just like it and it sounded great but after I had Rick Aiello send me some replacement nibro magnets it sounds awesome with lots of punch and sustain.

$300.00 about right. I have a similar guitar with the SUPRO name on it. MOTS is identical. If it works, they have a good sound. Might have to change the screw-on cord as they short out easily.
