I received my new Pettingill Six String Tear Drop Lap Steel today around 10:20am from Fedex. It's bitter cold here (-4 this morning), so I sat and looked at the box for the better part of the day waiting for the guitar to acclimate. When I opened it up around 4:30, It did not disappoint. Just beautiful to say the least.

At close examination, it's easy to see the tight detail that Tom puts into his work. Or as Tom says, "a labor of love". The marriage of the Black Walnut and the Quilted Maple is perfect. It's a joy to look at for sure.

I plugged it into a little battery powered Vox DA10 amp while I tuned it up. I have some high end electric guitars like PRS/Gibson etc. None of which sounds very good through this little Vox. On the other hand, the Pettingill really surprised me when I laid the bar across the strings and played. This amp has never sounded this good. I can't wait to hear it through my Princeton Reverb.

I'm a very happy camper. I'm ready to dig into that C6 tuning.

Butamus! Tom is a great guy I have been putting together a 12 string bass lap and have asked Tom numerous question and he has alway come through with an answer. There is a special place in heaven with a chair with his name on it in the Holy Rollers all Saint band. I even think that David is in the band since he played a string instrument.

Tom thats a beautiful lapper. I am curious where did you get the white nut material? None of the ones I see are wide enough.Stew Mac?

They are good quality and reasonably priced too. They also sell documented legal pre ban elephant ivory and Mammoth ivory too.

I got one of Tom's New Yorker models over the holidays and could not be happier with the workmanship, sound and playability. Tom is a master craftsman. I thought my wife would kill me for getting another guitar but once she saw it, the artistic beauty of the piece saved my life. It leans against a wall in my living room and calls out to me to play it. Tuned it to C6 to inspire me to learn that more challenging tuning (time to move on from the major tunings). Thanks for the beautiful instrument, Tom.
