Does anyone know who owns/possesses the master tapes of Jimmy Day's "Steel and Strings" and "Golden Steel Guitar Hits"?

This is a guess:

The original recordings were done for Philips, which was a subsidiary of Mercury.

Mercury became part of Polygram in the 1970s.

Polygram was purchased by Universal Music Group in the 1990s.

Universal Music Group has a country operation and group of artists out of Nashville and pop artists elsewhere. That's probably where I'd start to ask around. I would assume Universal has the rights.

You might check the Bear Family CD reissues of the material to see if Universal is credited.

I don't have the slightest idea about physical possession of master recordings, but Bear presumably had access when the two Day CDs were released about 15 years ago.

The Bear family has reissued the recordings. I just bought a CD of it at the Ernest Tubb Record shop just before thanksgiving. Really good stuff except the background vocals start driving you crazy after awhile.

I'd love to get my hands on some of his CD's.

Any recommendations? Sources?

Jurgen Koop, here in Austin, is the man who would know for sure as he put together the reissue package, I believe, and worked closely with Jimmy on many of his projects. Don't think he visits the forum but I would be willing to check with him to see what he says.

My CD of this is a single package with both "LP's" in the single package. Can't remember if it's one CD or two, but all the tracks came in one set.

I have the double cd. Its on one cd. but I NEVER listen to golden hits, only steel and strings. Golden Hits doesnt do much for me . i liked stel and strings so much I bought it on vinyl too which you can do right here thru the forum.

I agree about the vocals, they ruin an otherwise great record. The nut that came up with that idea should get thirty lashes with a G sharp string. YOU BETCHA,DYK?BC.

I had his orginal recordings back in the mid 60s and they did not have the voices. I may be wrong but i believe it was Chet Atkins who had the voices added later.
Wasn't this about the time Chet was going pop?

If yor stereo has a balance knob, pan it all the way to the non "orchestral" side... Much better
