I'm having a hard time using
the Open G tuning for some country
rock songs. I need to try another
tuning. Any suggestions?
I like what Mike Johnson played on
Darryl Worleys "Have you forgotten"
Was that Open E tuning?

I believe open E tuning will be better suited for country rock such as Darryl Worley than the C6th tuning. I assume you're looking for a six string tuning and not an eight string tuning?
1. E
2. B
3. G#
4. E
5. B
6. E _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

I agree with Brad. Keith Richards removed the low D string from his guitar when playing in Open G. He only needed 5 strings for what he was playing. Open E effectively does this, while adding another root string on the top.
It is nice to have the root on the bottom AND on the top, as in Open E. If you like the tonality of G, you can always tune the Open E, 3 frets higher. This way you will still have the "familiar" C and D at the 5th and 7th frets.
In Open G, your shuffle rhythm patterns start with strings 5 and 4. In Open E/D, the same patterns start on strings 6 and 5 for a much lower sound. |

I am looking for the six string tuning.
I think I'll look on youtube for
some songs played in Open E.
If you have in other suggestions,
I'd appreciate them.

John Tuggle has some Open E Slide (not lap steel) dvds that you can download instantly for about $20 each. Most of it is directly transferable to lap.

If you like Derek Trucks, you will like DVD 4. |
