Is this a tribute show after his death, or is this the concert with Roy and all those folks that was filmed in black & white?

......as well as J.D. Souther, Jennifer Warnes, Tom Waits, Jackson Browne, members of the Elvis 70s band, and others. The audience is star-studded as well. It's actually called "A Black and White Night". I believe it was 1987 or early '88. I love it too. My only complaint is that I wish Springsteen could have laid back a bit more; he is kind of up in Roy's face the whole time. But I guess Tunnel of Love was the #1 album in the world at the time, and it wasn't a bad thing to have Bruce front and centre, as bad as it looks in retrospect. Very cool show, though. It wasn't too long after this that he made the underrated, and now hard to find, Mystery Girl. That reminds me....I must check Itunes to see if I can find it there. I've recently misplaced my CD copy and the local record store can't find a distributor.

I seem to remember Springsteen holding his own in a low key guitar duel with James Burton. He is actually a very good guitarist.
I enjoyed that video, and it was nice to see Orbison bask in the well deserved respect of his peers.
Just the same, I would rather see a video of Roy on his own, in a less celebrity cluttered environment. He was really amazing!

The other star studded video of Roy is the documentary about the Traveling Willburys. The band included Roy, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty and I believe Jeff Healy. Definitely worth watching.

On Roy's death, I believe it was 'Esquirer' magazine that posed the question, ("What are your thoughts on Roy?") to (at the time) the top 100 most influential/popular singers/musicians/entertainers, etc.
Bob Dylan was one of the "askees", and I just loved his response - "oh Roy(?); he's an opera singer".
Usual Dylan. Just said it all. |

I love the "Black and White Night" because James Burton gets to stretch out more than we hardly ever get to hear! And I agree that Springsteen is a pretty good guitar player too.
Roy himself needs no comment--the man was music through and through. |
