Is one inch the largest diameter available?
Any drawbacks on thicker bars?

Larger bars are available (I have them all the way up to 1 1/4"). The upside is that they smooth out your playing. The downside is that they slow you down, cause parallax problems, and don't give as clean a sound.

Despite popular opinion, I remain unconvinced that anything over 7/8" has any substantial benefits, sound-wise.
