Isn't it just a cavity hogged out with a router?

I see what you're getting at. It sure does look like Stringmaster turners.

I can't find a decent pic of the headstock anywhere!

I'm pretty sure it uses drop in tuner pans like a Stringmaster. If you look on Mike Steven's website it says "No Stringmasters were harmed in the construction of the Guit-Steel". You used to have the option of using your own parts or his which look a lot like the Stringmaster/Deluxe 8 parts. He even uses 8 string Stringmaster type pickups with the black cover.

My guess is he is having the parts manufactured by someone. That could explain the $10,500 price tag.

Jr's Guit Steel is a cool instrument for sure. At 10.5k, its going to be a limited production run.
Either he found a small stash of Stringmaster parts or he had a die made and is having the pans stamped out new.

It would be my guess that its built from Guyatone
parts -- look at Dougs new G.A.S.
