Paul,
You have what is known as the "cut tail" model. Material from the back of the neck has been cut, or machined away to allow clearance for the changer, which is attached to the cabinet (rather than "bolted-on" to the top of the neck).

paul...the cuttail model, as yours is, is one of the best, most consistently good for tone and tuning. don't start thinking you need something different.
i believe buddy emmons' 'blade', the most famous guitar in steel history, was a cuttail. |

This is the 3rd Pedal Steel I have had and this
is the sound I have been looking for so I am
planning to keep it, but I havent had it long
and time may change things.
