Question I am considering buying either an older version of Band In A Box or the newer version 2008.5. How many of our lap steel players are using this backup program and how do you all like it, positive or negative replys encouraged. Thanks in advance my friends!!

As a preformance tool I think it is a little lame but gets the job done. Some of the sounds are a bit of a stretch. It IS a great practice tool however. I've been using it for about 2 years.

hey Jim,
I'd suggest getting the most current version. They keep improving it with each release - at least that's my experience.

Great program for rehearsal! Originally that was it's intended purpose. However, with the new stuff they keep adding to it, there are many ways to use this program.

I love it! I have been trying to co-ordinate the creation of a blues performance with three of my brothers and I for the family Christmas party on Dec. 13th. We are all between the ages of 56 and 65. One brother has been playing fingerpicking guitar for many years. Our vocalist has never sang except at a Karaoke bar.... Our harmonica player has never played in front of anyone before. I'll be playing lap steel.

I made some backing tracks using BIAB. I emailed a copy to each of my three brothers. This way we can all practice our "parts", in time, without needing a metronome. My trax have bass, drums, and piano.

Gerald Ross makes good use of BIAB too but I think the secret is using the better sound fonts than the standard BIAB ones.

Ray,

Great idea for the practice tracks. I like to put the Hammond organ in there for blues tunes. Very cool to be playing with your family!

Another program I use for practice is the "Amazing Slow Downer" It loops, corrects pitch and track really well when you turn down the speed to steal (steel) licks. It will play just about any type of audio track, CD, mp3, wav etc.

George, I spent a while doing searches and didn't turn up anything directly from Big Jim Baron. Have you got any hints on search terms?

Very Happy Thanks, i got version 9 of of Ebay for a pittance, and if I really like it, ill upgrade via the website. Gonna use it as a practice tool for both lap steel and regular electric guitar as well. As usual, you get such great answer from forum members. I have to say we are a small caring family Very Happy

Rich,

I completely agree about Amazing Slow Downer! Eric Clapton recorded "It Hurts Me Too" in the key of C# on the "From the Cradle" CD. I used ASD to transpose it to the key of D for practicing in Open D. Very Happy

It is truly an amazing tool for musicians. You can loop a lick as slow as you like without changing the pitch.

I recently bought the BIAB 2008 with the updates. It's been a great practice tool, especially with the "real" instruments. I recorded my version of Lost Highway, using the updates. http://www.hsga.org/new_design/ChuckLettes.htm

I called PG Music to upgrade my 2008 to 2008.5 and the nice guy on the phone said WAIT about a week and they will have the 2009 version ready at a much better deal. He said there would be more Real Tracks instruments. Nice of them to tell me this instead of just take my money, seems liek a good company. The Real Tracks instruments and drums sound killer! No more listening to synth sounds!!

Big Jim Baron (Bigjim4b@sbcglobal.net)is the forum guru on the old and new BIAB stuff. What Dyke says is true. Jim spends whatever time is necessary to answer your questions and gets the new BIAB programs wired right away.

I used BIAB for a lot of the tracks in my new book. Go to www.mikeihde.com
click on "listen to an audio clip" and choose one. With the right sounds, and I have a bunch in my recording program, (Digital Performer) you can get very realistic results.
