Hey all,
I've been a long time lurker on here, just recently became a forum member and only a limited amount of posting so far, but that could easily all change. I am a total nut for all things guitar and lap/slide, steel related. I've played a wide variety of musics over the years, mostly as a guitarist, and have now joined up with a band where I am playing no standard guitar at this point, a scary thing for me at first, but I'm loving it, playing lap steel, dobro, pedal steel, maybe a little mando and banjo when called for. Anyways, we just demoed a new song and it's my first recording with the band, playing dobro on this one. More to come soon...

Hope you enjoy!

Welcome to the forum Julian - you played some tasty dobro licks in that tune! _________________

Big thanks Rick! You are quite the steel maestro yourself. I've checked out much of your playing on your website! That tune is more about texture than anything too tricky. A few bar slats and stuff, but mostly trying to get good tone and feel... |

Hi Peter,
Much thanks for the compliment. Really like your band's sound too! What's the gear you are using on those YouTube videos?
All the best,

Thanks, Julian. We muddle along as best we can.
I'm using my Melobar lap steel with a Vintage Vibe Strat-size blade pickup. The amp is a Fender Blues Jr (I modded the tone stack and put in a Texas Heat speaker). I usually play with moderate drive at the amp. I was using a MI Audio Blue Boy Deluxe for overdrive (I now use a Timmy) and a single transistor clean boost that I built myself (easy and fun!). I don't use any other effects, although one of these days I want to try a delay pedal (I have more pedals for my banjo than the steel).
What's your rig like? What kind of d*bro and steels are you playing? _________________ Peter

We haven't been playing out yet, starting to play some shows in February and I need to narrow down what I'll be bringing. At this point in rehearsal I'm using a Regal made dobro from the 30s that has been retrofitted with sound posts- going to have to either buy something new with a pickup or just mike the Regal for the time being. I have a serious gear addiction, also have a late 20s National Style 3 squareneck and a mysterious Style O from the 30's as far as resonators go. On the lap front I've been rehearsing with an old Magnatone, but am thinking about using one of the two Rickenbacher pre-war bakelites that I have, all 6 string guitars, I have a bunch more lap steels, all vintage except for a few that I have made - getting into prototyping steels with the thought of marketing when I'm happy enough with the results... Also playing an old Sho-Bud pedal steel with this crew. Using a mid 60's Vibrolux Reverb for the time being, might try my old Ampeg Reverberocket. Not putting too much between the electric instruments and the amp, sometimes a touch of overdrive from either a Stamps Drive-O-Matic or a Fulltone Full-Drive 2.
Anyway, that is a little glimpse into my sick and twisted world. |

Peter, you have no idea! I have way too much gear, lots of old guitars and amps that I have acquired over the years. I feel fortunate to be the custodian of all of them. I should be taking some pics soon, and will post!
Best,
Julian |
