Lonnie, I could help out with a small donation toward a purchase. I sure appreciate what these guys do for us. Maybe some others would like to join in this and we could get him a pretty nice guitar.

I just finished an 8 string laps steel for one of my dealers. He also purchased a 12 string pedal steel from me a week before and is uncertain now if he needs the 8 string or not. He is looking at it and if I get it back next week, lets, the three of us work together to send this to Iraq. If I do not get it back, I can work towards building another for him.

Jerry, that is a fine idea but I for one would welcome others to get involved and help. I'm sure many other Forumites feel a debt of gratitude to our servicemen and women and would be eager to help one who wants a steel guitar to take over there with him. That way, several small amounts would take care of it.

I am overwhelmed by your generosity. This fellow (private Nick Ackron) is now stationed In Syracuse NY and he is scheduled to leave for Iraq in February of 2009. Every free chance he gets he comes to my house in Rochester to learn. He spent Thanksgiving with me I had a great time with him and four other young steel players (all under twenty) we jammed until early the next morning. Any way, I have a little time. Again I am touched by your support and generosity. I’ll keep you guys updated here.

Lonnie, do keep us advised and let us know where and how much. Perhaps Jerry Knapper can let us know if the guitar he referred to will be available.

Hi Fellows. It is great to see the interest in helping a soldier. The 8 string I had did sell, but I told the new owner abount it and he said he would donate to help as well. My email address is
jerico47@sbcglobal.net. I will begin building another 8 string very soon and we should have one plenty in time. Please before you do donate, let me know how much you are willing to donate in the form of a pledge and I will know how much we have to put into the guitar. Obviously I will do this without profit and donate my time so we can keep the cost down. Upon completion I can notify each of you and moneys can be sent or paypaled in to cover your pledge.
I would be happy to entertain any and all suggestions beyond this.
Lonnie, I will need your address or the location to ship the guitar. Also I need to know if there will be room to for him to keep it in a case, since I have case. It is always nice to ship in case, but it there would not be room for a case to Iraq I could ship it without a case. Just let me know.

Lonnie, what is the amplification situation? Does he have or can he take an amp? Do we need to come up with a headphone type amp so he can hear what he is doing? Your thoughts?

Lonnie, I have a Carvin 8-string lap that also has 3 legs with it. It needs some kind of work on the pick-up or electronics. I will ship it to this young man free of charge if he can find someone to get it up and running for him. Let me know if he is interested.

This sounds great. Maybe we can pitch in on the shipping to cover Al's costs, or contribute to the work needed?

Thanks, Ray. I had the pleasure of meeting Lonnie in the Jackson room at the '07 Dallas convention. Very nice man and super picker. It's nice that he's taking an interest in a soldier who wants to bring a steel with him overseas.

Thanks all, you guys and gal(s) are great. Lonnie, if you think the Carvin Al has would work I would be glad to work on it and send it on to you or he could send it to you and let use chip in to pay to have it worked on. We might have enough funds to get him a volume pedal or whatever else you think he might need.

Hey Lonnie:
Looks like we will collectively have a steel for this soldier one way or the other. If the carvin is acceptable, that sounds like a great deal and we all know if it needs work that Roller can fix it. If he doesn't have what is needed he can go through my parts and pic out what he needs.

Hi Lonnie,
if he still needs one I have an eight string lap he can have. It's complete and sounds great, I have a gig bag, too. No charge for this guy, God bless him.
If you've already made other arrangements let me know and I'll be happy to kick-in a donation. Contact me via email if your friend wants the guitar.
Thank you,
Cliff
