I got a question the other day, via a friend, from a young aspiring girl steel player who wanted to know:

"who are some lady steel players?"

Off the top of my head I had Cindy Cashdollar and Sarah Jory, and after a bit more thinking I got Barbara Mandrell and Elizabeth West.

Then I discovered Joan Cox and Marion Hall, who I had not heard of before.

Any other noteables?

Ya'll have my interest.

I believe there are several ladies studing the PSG. They just need to get the grit to come out of the practice room.

Do they really use the term "cool" in France? or does it mean something else?

LOL..shyness has never been my problem...ask anyone who knows me. I have enough sense to know I still make too many mistakes, but that too shall pass. There WILL come a time when I start hauling all that equipment to every local jam I can get too. I will be encouraging other ladies to do the same. But don't worry, we'll save you a spot! LOL Very Happy

Marion Hall was a very good friend of mine. Back in the late 50's and into the 60's she had the premier Steel Guitar job in So. Calif. playing at the Town Hall Party on Friday & Saturday nights, the Town Hall Party T.V. shows during the week, Tex Ritter's T.V. show Ranch Party plus recording with many of the big names. Her playing and stature never went to her head, she was always very down to earth and humble. She had just a super personality.

That's right, Brett. She was 10 years old. Good time in your life to start learning the steel. You can't help but get good!

Barbara Mandrell is probably the only one that is famous meaning a large part of the population has heard of her. All the others are known to us and are wonderful players I'm sure.
Joan Cox has played with Tony Booth, Darrell McCall, Johnny Russell, Jeannie Seely, The Texas Playboys, Tom Morrell just to name a few. She has performed on many steel shows including the TSGA show and the ISGC in St. Louis for many years which invites only the best players. And IMHO she is the best female steel player in the world not to mention that she plays better than most men including me. I am very proud of my Joanie. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Dumplin', you left out Johnny Bush in your list of those who've backed up Joanie! Laughing

I've gotta second Johnny Cox's nomination. Joan Cox is the premier female player in these times, no lie. And also one of the best steel players period, regardless of gender.

IMHO, of course. Wink

And I'm glad Billy T. brought up Marian Hall. She was a really nice lady, and I mean "lady" in the classical sense of the word... gracious, genteel, and charming.

One time I tuned into the St Louis convention in the middle of some of the best C6 you'll hear. It turned out that Joan Cox was the player.
