What would be the tunings of choice for triple neck steel? Right now I would lean toward C6th & E13th but what would be the 3rd neck? I really enjoy the Roy Wiggins sound very much.

I'm with Mr. Hatcher. C6 and Leavitt. If I'm not mistaken, Wiggins E13 was just C6 tuned up four frets higher. If I had to choose a third tuning, I would try the first 8 strings (these necks are 8 string I assume) of Tom Morrell's tuning. I think it goes (G#-F#-E-C#-B-G#-F#-D) from high to low. But as of right now, I'm a two tuning person. And my Leavitt playing is very weak.

A 6th, E 13th and C6th. I played with many bands with horns and singers who did a lot of stuff in Bb and C. The A 6th allowed me to get some great low , growling sounds in those keys - plus I could easily switch back and forth from E13th to A6th necks in same song.

Thanx,
jim

This E13 is very popular in Western Swing and 50 years ago it was all but the standard tuning for the outside neck of a triple neck guitar.

From 1945 to 1960 I played a three neck non-pedal steel guitar. On the outside neck I used an E13th with a high G# on top. The middle neck was an A6th tuning (used by Noel Boggs and Herb Remington). The inside neck was an inverted tuning given to me by Herb Reminginton which the first six strings were a C# minor tuning with an G# on top and the bottom three strings were back up the scale: B-flat, E-flat, and F#. I always left all three necks on at once and moved between the necks as needed for whatever song I was playing, or backing. All three of these tunings were relative to each other using the same guage strings where you couldn't detect changing necks in the middle of a song.

I prefer C6th & E13th and B11thFor a 3 neck guitar

B11th as in :- (for 22.5" Scale length)
1= E .017
2= C#.019
3= A .022
4= F#.024 PLAIN OR 26 WOUND
5= D#.034 WOUND
6= B .040
7= A .052
8= B .070 or 72
..................................................
THESE BELOW WOULD BE THE GAUGES FOR A 26" SCALE
E13th neck
1= E .013
2= C#.015
3= B .017
4= G#.022 PLAIN
5= E .032 WOUND
6= D .040
7= B .046
8= E .054

B11th neck
1= E .013
2= C#.015
3= A .019
4= F#.022 PLAIN OR 24 WOUND
5= D#.032 WOUND
6= B .038
7= A .048
8= B .068

......................................
These are other gauges I use for 22.5" Scale
D13th
1= D.016 OR .017
2= B.018 0R .020
3= A.020 OR .022
4= F#.024 PLAIN OR .026 WOUND
5= D.034 WOUND
6= C.038 WOUND
7= A.042 WOUND
8= D.068 WOUND OR .070 WOUND

A6th neck
1= E.014 OR .015
2= C#.017
3= A.018 OR .020
4= F#.022 PLAIN OR .024 WOUND
5= E.030
6= C#.036
7= A.042
8= G.048

I find that Ernie Ball are as good as anything, I usually change my strings on my lap steels once a month and on my pedal guitars once a fortnight and on my 6 stringers once a week.

All wound strings just plain old fashioned 'Nickel Wound', NOT Stainless.

Gawd Basil !!! I could retire a rich man on the money you spend on strings for all those steels !! I wish I lived closer !! I would treat your throwaways like new strings !! I change my strings when they break or get real rusty !!! I don't like that "new string zing "" !!! But I love your posts and knowledge !!! And I think C-6th , A-6th , & E-13th is the best way to go !! Eddie "C" ( the old non-pedal , no reverb , dead string , out of work old geezer )

Well, Basil is a professional. We amateurs can't always afford to keep changing strings. I have about 200 instruments, of various shapes and sizes, and if I were to change the strings regularly it would bankrupt me and consume all my spare time. I have to admit that I have instruments which have the same strings on as when I built them over 30 yrs. ago.
But we have to realise that it's an excuse. New strings do sound better once they've settled in.

Hello lads, well, as for the cost of strings, it's not too bad if you buy in bulk. (And I've plenty of that!)

Eddie (Old Man) the A6 is the "Other tuning to use besides the C6th And E13th, but it's only a small variation to go from that to the B11th, so the A6th neck COULD be multi-purpose i.e. A6/B11..

Alan, I'm Professional by definition, but !!

Hi Basil , Question = I tune my A-6th with an Eb on the low - bottom string just 1 tone flat from the lower E to what I call a B-9th ?? When I strum up from the bottom Eb and skip the two Es it's a B-9th , to me . Do they call that tuning also a B-11th ?? I could never figure this out ?? Maybe you can help out this old guy !! and thanks !!! Eddie "C" ( the old non-pedal , no reverb , dead string , out of work old geezer )

F#m13 or Yes, B11th (Minus the root) the E's are the 11th note qualifier..Being as they are ABOVE the D# (the third of the B chord)
I can't figure your tuning because it has 9 strings in it if it's this way :-
From the Bottom..
D# the third
F# the fifth
A the flat Seventh
C# the ninth
E the eleventh
F# the fifth
A
C#
E

Reply with quote

Hi Basil , I only use 7 strings , from the bottom = Eb ( tuned 1 tone lower than next E ) , C# , E , F# , A , C# & hi E on top . This works very well for me . All my tunings are either 6 or 7 strings . I have a lever (three chord) changer on the other neck. Sorry if I am not making sense !! I am not too familiar with notation etc. Thanks for trying to help !!! Eddie "C"

Is it just the onset of senility or am I not alone in keeping a notebook of what tunings I use ?

When I change the strings on something as simple as C6 I have to refer to my notes. You see, when I'm playing I just think in terms of tones, and relative string positions. I only have to think of absolute pitch when I completely change the strings or when I come to record together with other instruments. Embarassed Embarassed

When I talked to Eddie Rivers at the Asleep@the Wheel show I saw, he said the single neck Fender he was using that day was tuned to A6. He said he liked the fatter sound he got from that tuning. A recomendation from him sounds like a winner to me. John.

He's not alone. I understand that it's Herb Remington's favorite as well.

It's no big deal and really adds nothing to what has already been said, so; I guess it's only my 2-cts.! Way, way back in the early 50's, when I saw someone (Bob English from Joplin, MO) playing a T-8 Fender Custom for the very first time, I remember his three popular Tunings of that time were:
#1._A6___#2._C6___#3._E9/13________
____E________E________G#___________
____C#_______C________E____________
____A________A________C#___________
____F#_______G________B____________
____E________E________G#___________
____C#_______C________F#___________
____A________A________D____________
____F#_______E________G#_[EDITED]__
(Doesn't he have a wonderful memory!) That's about all I've got left! I even came back to Edit the E9/13!

Hi Carroll , The basic A-6th is the top six strings of Johns tuning setup . You don't really need the bottom lo A & F# . All you need is the top six strings !! Good luck !! Eddie "C" ( the old non-pedal , no reverb , out of work old geezer )

Aloha all,
My Excel triple 8 is set up with JB's C diatonic on the inside neck, EFGABCE low to high, Middle neck is C6th, FACEGACE And outside neck is modified B11th, and I will have to look again to make sure what it is right now, maybe EC#AF# D# E A High to low, and with a twist here and there I can play some A6th stuff like Speedin west ,Etc.
I just use 7 strings on 2 of the necks, and keep a small lap steel close by with an open G tuning for some Blue grass if need be.
Aloha,
Phil
