See the link below for a review just posted on my site. I recorded samples of each reverb type the RV-7 offers and also added a Christmas tune recorded with the RV-7 on guitar and steel. There's plenty of pictures and links to other information also.
You can read the review to see that it's not a glowing approval, so in all honesty, for my needs, I can't say I prefer this unit over my RV-5. Your mileage, in some cases, will most certainly vary!
UPDATE: I adjusted my amp settings and waited a few days to give my ears a rest. After doing a few quick swaps between the RV-5 and RV-7 , the results are the same though.

Wow Greg.
That's a classy review page you got there. Very nice work. I may not agree with your preference of the Boss RV-5 pedal over a Lexicon MPX-1, the Verbzilla, or this RV-7, but I do appreciate your in-depth and insightful review.
To me the Boss RV-5 is a bit too low-fi and grainy and the highs are kind of spattery, and the overall reverb character is sort of unrealistic. But not to totally knock it. The RV-5 does indeed work pretty well with steel guitar. I just find these Lexicon algorithms in this new RV-7 to be more lush and real. I'll have to look more deeply into this compression and darkening factor you find with the RV-7. I have not yet given it nearly the scrutiny that you have.
Kudos,

Brad,
I went back today and tried both pedals a few times thinking maybe my ears were off. Why not, the rest of me is off. Same result, I like the RV-5 better but I would be happy owning the RV-7 as well. The RV-7 seems to excel with the nylon string guitar and it is smoother. Perhaps the RV-7 is even on the tone and the RV-5 boosts the highs a bit. I still hear the compression though on the RV-7. This morning I almost canned the whole review despite all the work I put into it, knowing how unpopular my results were going to be. But then I thought it better to be honest and it's not that important that we all agree on everything.
Assuming the possibility that the RV-5 does boost the highs a bit, that's good news for me cause it overcomes the loss of putting my Guyatone MD-3 in the line. This combo gives me the equivalent of the old Boss RV-3.

I guess it's another case of " this is what my ears like " .......Everybody has a different idea of what tones they like .......
Greg,
Thanks so much for your reviews .....Agree or not with your assessment , they are very well done, and I for one really appreciate them ..... I also can't help but wonder what differences our pickups in our pedal steels make since they are so much more powerful than a typical electric guitar ....It has to make a difference as to how ANY pedal reacts to the power of a pedal steel pickup ......Thanks again ...Jim |

I'm with Jim. I just love your reviews Greg. They're very professinal, thorough, informative, and I really like the personal side where you offer your own opinions. Seriously impressive stuff you do there. It's a great resource for people wanting to learn about a piece of gear. And to have actual sound samples posted as you do is about the best resource there is.

Greg,
Before reading Your review I had several questions about this device.
Your review answered every one of My questions.
Thank You for the excellent in depth study.
It makes such a big difference when I can read a review compiled by a well esteemed steel player.
Thanks again for Your time and effort.
Best regards

Thanks for the support everyone!
As mentioned in my top post, I recorded another tune (O How He Loves You And Me) and posted it on the RV-7 review page. I reduced the mid range cut and changed the Tilt and treble settings on the Steel King to get back some of the highs and make the steel a bit clearer. I think the sound is still more compressed than the RV-5 however.
