I think it came out in the late fortys or into the fiftys. I can't belive I know most of the words but can't put a name on the singer or singers.

You know the last time I googled it nothing came up. By adding fred rose to it I found about a zilion artists. Carl Smith, Marty Robbins to name a few.
One name that stood out for what I was thinking was Jack Scott in 1960. I'll see if I can find a sound sample. My first thought was who is Jack Scott but does ring a bell. I shipped out to Germany that year so were I may have heard it is any bodys guess.

I'm not positively certain who was first, but I'm pretty sure it may have been Hank Williams (Sr.) or possibly ET.? Many others have cut it as well.

I know for a fact it was not the first I'm thinking of.

The vocalist I believe you're seeking is:
REX ALLEN, Sr. on Decca
The Steel Guitar player was JERRY BYRD.
Jerry did a batch of Rex Allen records both on Mercury and Decca.

well I down loaded Jack Scotts version and boy its close to what i'm thinking. He has the Jordanairs singing back ground on it I belive. He has Very deep voice also. Rex Allen or maybe Rex Allen JR would also fit my thinking.
Just for kicks give Marty Robbins a listen to on it. Nothing wrong with this.

I still have the 78rpm sung by Acuff and Oz playing. This was cut during WW2 as the record is made from garbage and other materials that was used then due to shortages. Pigs would eat the records given the chance. This was on the OKEH label. cc

I will go with: Roy Acuff back in the 40's. During the WW2 years records were so scarce that you would buy any record that came into the record store, good or bad. I had an old wind up record player on which I first played Spade Cooley's "Shame on You" and "Oklahoma Stomp".On that scratchy phonograph I thought they sounded great.

I'm with Jack. I believe that Eddy Arnold had the bigggest hit on that tune. Somewhere around 59 or 60 I think John.
