Country music covers a lot of real life topics-

anybody know of any songs about surgery?
Anticipating going under the knife?
Recovery rooms? Shocked

"I'd rather have a free bottle in front of me than a prefrontal lobotomy."

A much overlooked hit by Stark Naked and the Car Thieves.

Dave, if that means surgery is looming for you then best of luck, my friend; is that the case...?

On a lighter note, has their ever been a country cover of "Cuts Like a Knife"?

I almost hate to mention "A Wound Time Can't Erase" by Stonewall Jackson (and later Ricky Skaggs).

Better, how about Ray Charles: "I Don't Need No Doctor"?

Or Johnny Paycheck:"Like me (You'll Recover in Time)"?

Offhand, only a couple come to mind:

Jimmie Heap and The Melody Masters: When They Operated On Papa, They Opened Mama’s Male.

Homer Clemons: Operation Blues, which has a long steel intro and then these immortal lines:

Now won’t you climb upon this table, pull up that gown
Raise up that left leg, let that right leg down
Pull off them stockings, that silk underwear
Cause the doctor’s got to cut you mama, don’t know where
The doctor knows his business, the doctor knows just what to do

Both recorded close to 55 or 60 years ago. The Clemons song is taken from a much earlier blues version by Georgia Tom (Dorsey) and Jane Lucas.

Good luck Dave. The last time instead of putting the sand bag on my crotch so it wouldn't bleed or bruise, a very pretty nurse sat on the side of the bed and pressed with her hand for twenty minutes. It made the whole thing worth while, hope you have a similar experience. No real recovery time, went home in a couple of hours.

Dave, I'm a little late but two songs that fit the bill are: "Surgery" and "Appendectomy-Country Style"
by Oscar Brand.

Chorus:
"Surgery, Surgery,
First you slice and then you stich,
Cut it out and you'll be rich.
Surgery, Surgery,
There's no peril,
Keet it sterile,
Surgery

There are 5 verses.

The "Appendectomy" describes the operation to a square dance theme. The refrain is "Doing that McBurney Square."

I used to play these a lot when we had medical
folks at our parties. (Wife is an RN)

One I can think of offhand is; "Soldiers Joy, 1864" by Guy Clark and Shawn Camp.

Soldiers Joy, 1864
Guy Clark / Shawn Camp

First I thought a snake had got me it happened dreadful quick
T’was a bullet bit my leg, right off I got sick
I came to in a wagon load of ten more wounded men
Five was dead by the time we reached that bloody tent

Gimme some of that Soldier’s Joy, you know what I mean
I don’t want to hurt no more my leg is turnin’ green

The doctor came and looked at me and this is what he said
Your dancin’ days are done, son, it’s a wonder you ain’t dead
Then he went to work with a carvin’ knife sweat fell from his brow
‘Bout killed me tryin’ to save my life when he cut that lead ball out

Give me some of that Soldier’s Joy, ain’t you got no more
Hand me down my walkin’ cane I ain’t cut out for war

Red blood run right through my veins run all over the floor
Run right down his apron strings like a river out the door
He handed me a bottle and said, son drink deep as you can
He turned away then he turned right back with a hacksaw in his hand

Gimme some of that Soldier’s Joy you know what I like
Bear down on that fiddle boys just like Saturday night

Gimme some of that Soldier’s Joy you know what I crave
I’ll be hittin’ that Soldier’s Joy til I’m in my grave

Respectfully,
dave burr
