That's Buddy Emmons' first Sho Bud, originally a double 8 which Pete converted to a D10. Under that Pete Drake-plaque should be Buddie's name. Cool video!

Jeff, thanks for posting, that is the first time I have ever seen Pete Drake on video ,I've listened to him for 43 years on records though, Jody I go with you all the way a phenomenal player.

Such a simple thing, dreamy overall sound, beautifully performed by everyone and a million seller for him.
Are there any more videos of him playing ?

DEFINITELY NOT HIS BEST, Its a pity pete is remembered for this talking guitar , he did so much more great stuff.
Im a big fan but this , although different and it sold a million for him in 1964, it was a bit of a gimmick.......but of all the instruments I have heard over the years played through a talk box the pedal steel for me has the best sound.

No not his best but lets not forget , at his busiest period ( most of the 1960s )he was doing more sessions than all of the other steel players in Nashville put together, sometimes five sessions a day ( his words ) so theres a lot to choose from to pick out his best.

Some of my favorite Pete Drake stuff is on the Tammy Wynette/George Jones albums..his stuff may be considered simple by some but I am sure that no one can argue how very effective & suitably placed those licks were.

Allan, I am not aware of any more video clips that may be available.

All the best. ..jeff

Guys, I was referring to the time element, not this particular song, however it was a best seller. At this time during his career, Pete was just about 1st call for everybody. Jody.

Sho-Bud 1,2,&3

Yes Jussi! That is Buddy's first Sho-Bud, Jimmy Day had the first one, then Buddy #2 & mine was #3, When Shot asked me to sign my name & they would rout out my signature on the guitar & fill it in with black putty, I declined & the guitar still shows the beautiful birdseye, I did, however have my name painted on the front in black for a short time, Then in 59 Shot converted it to a D-9 & refinished the cabinet & added the Hearts&Diamonds inlay! [No decals] God Bless Shot Jackson! Al Udeen

If you look closely at Pete's guitar, the first three pedal rods are closer together than the rest. Was that common on the early Sho-Buds or is it just that particular guitar? Anyone know?

Yes Dan, that's how early Buds were; E9 pedals were closer together than the C6 pedals. I have a -63 D10 and it's just like that.

It would be cool if there were some video's out there of Pete playing steel without that dreadful talk box. I don't like the "talk box" sound, no matter who is playing it. I do like Pete's playing though, but just not this stuff.

Ken, I too would love to see Pete playing without the talkbox, but it looks as though there maybe non.
I was told some time ago that the Earnest Tubb record shop had two DVDs of pete Drake but I couldnt find them on the web site, if you happen to look let me know if you find them.
Of all the instruments I have heard played through a talk box I think the PSG has the best sound but it is a bit of a gimmick.

I often wondered who the steel player on the Gary Stewart records was. I thought he had a unique sound. I had a DJ look on his CD cover notes one night and it was Pete Drake.

Music hath the charm to soothe a savage beast, but I'd try a 10mm first.

I beleive Alvino Rey developed and used this technique with his big band 20 years earlier. I remember an old standard he did it on called "My Buddy".
