The ohm reading is quite high on a XR16, but that doesn't tell anything about the sound as Bill Lawrence winds his PU'ps diffrent than many others.

It has a fat sparkling midrange and a bit grainy sound.
I think it has a slightly "raw" feeling to it compared to for example a George L or a Truetone.
I experience both those as smoother.
That gives the XR-16 a nice bite to it.

The distance between PU and strings is very critical.
A XR-16 should have much more space than most other PU'ps to sound right.

Below is a link to some clips i recorded a rainy summers day when i had nothing better to do.
All clips were recorded at the same occation with the same recordig setup. I added some delay to the steel in the mix, but no eq.
The Emmons is equipped with a PF-II.

I have to agree with Ulf on his findings .....After reading his review , I thought I wrote it ....I could not agree more with what he had to say .... My Excel is a brite sounding steel , and with the XR16's , the tone evened out quite a bit ....The distance between the pickup and the strings IS VERY IMPORTANT !!.....Too close to the strings and the pickup is harsh and sounds bad .....Get the right settting for your steel and this pickup is very punchy and turned up with a good tube amp it will GROWL !!....It's got a very throaty midrange tone to it that drives pedals very well too if you use them .... Back off the expression pedal and there is enough umph there to play some very sweet toned music without being pushed ... One of the best humbucking pickups I have used to get nice pinch harmonic's from ....As most of my friends know, I am NOT a humbucker kind of guy ....I LOVE my single coils, but do not use them much because of clubs and gigs that have TERRIBLE electrics in the house and too much RFI interference ..... These pickups suited me just fine for Humbuckers ....Still not a single coil, but not bad and I'm pretty anal about my tone ...Jim
