I can't believe that there is a problem identifying the player. It was the hottest thing on the opry when Weldon introduced it to all steel players, circa 1965. He was the only steel guitarist who could play the arrangement at that time. Correct me if I'm wrong. I beg your pardon. I thought that you were referring to the original recording done in the mid-sixties. Many players have learned Weldon's technique well enough to play it in performances since that time. Excuse me Walter, could I ask if you are familiar with Weldon's arrangement? |

Jeff,
He could play it, although it wouldn't be the same. Very few steel breaks are as tough to emulate as "I'll Come Runnin'". |

Weldon certainly get's credit for originating the lick and recording it with Connie, but that's the Nashville Now band with Larry Sasser playing it.

IMHO, that ride actually defines the phrase...
"Often immitated, but never duplicated."
I've heard at least a hundred different steelers try, and fail, at capturing it. Other players, including the two youtube examples given, change it to something they can do, and just forget trying to do an exact duplication of what Weldon played.
A very wise move, I believe. |

Russ Hicks can do it, I think he followed Weldon. I have heard him do it several times. In Douglessville he broke a string on the intro and when Laney gave him the break he lipped the break. Lynn Owsley put his string back on for him.Cause he did not have his glases.

Ernest,
Do you remember which string Russ broke during his break? Could it have been the 3rd string? The troublesome G# string holds the record for snapping during performances, over all others. Russ would remember, I'm quite sure. |

I went up to look and it was the 3rd string, you know Russ hits them pretty hard. I told Russ to do it on C6 he gave me a look.

It's not Weldon Myrick in the video that Walter posted. Don't even look like Weldon. |

Definately the Wimpmeister. Although Weldon did the original recording, Larry is tearing it up in this video. One of the most underrated steel players of all time. |

There really is no great need to express over and over that in fact it is "Wimpy". Hundreds of players now play the break in an attempt to save face. My favorite band that plays once a month here in Pittsfield, features their regular member and steel guitarist playing "I'll Come Runnin'" on a regular basis. Personally, I give "Once A Day", and "Then And Only Then" as much play time. I've always been drawn to Weldon's crying intonations. |

At the beginning of the video, who is the bearded guitar player nearest the camera? I believe he is in the Roger Miller 'Invitation to the Blues' video playing fiddle with the Nashville Now Band.

Dicky Overby did a hell of a job on Leighan Cortes first cd ,who chose this song as her opening one....a must for all Texas Country and steel lovers.
Bobby Flores and Randy Reinhard play steel on it and Jim Loessberg on drums. |

In about '68 Connie came through California along with the Ray Price package. She brought Russ Hicks with her that played it like he was the original. But of course, Weldon did the recording but Russ had it down pat, as does Sasser in this video. |
