I have gathered a slew of useful info about steel guitar tunings. I was thinking of producing a 9" x 5" "Guitar Case Guide" to non-pedal tunings. This slim softbound book would fit into a steel guitar case so players would have all the info needed re tunings & string gauges at hand. I'd essentially be compiling info from many sources into one handy guide. I'll probably also throw in some history and anecdotes

Got the book 1/2 way laid out but then got slammed with lots of other work. I'll get back to it eventually.

JERRY BYRD published about a dozen or more non-pedal tunings in one of his instructional manuals.

You might want to look it up?

I'd also prefer the C6/A7 version, but; you might also consider a C13, Lo –> Hi: Bb~C~E~G~A~C~E. If I only had 7-strings to work with, I'd use my favorite tuning! C-Dia. Lo – Hi:
E~F~G~A~B~C~E still includes the C6 tuning and a heck of a lot more!
.014p = E*
.017p = C*
.018p = B
.020p = A*
.022w = G*
.026w = F
.028w = E*
Oops! I on the wrong thread! Sorry ’bout that!

Nice idea Andy! One thing that would make it really useful I think is to note who used or uses these tunings. When I'm trying to learn a song from an old recording, if I know what tuning they used, it makes the explorations much easier. I know some folks employed more than one for sure. Guages would help, and of course ranges of guages for certain scale lenghts and notes etc.

rock on man,

chris

Andy, there are quite a few tunings (and recommended gauges) listed here.

You bet I'm aware of your great site, Ric. It'll be some time before I can even think about tunings, however. Too many other projects in play a the moment
