A "friend" told me to download winmix.com for "free" music.

What exactly is this and what kind of trouble can you get into?

WINMIX IS A SOFTWARE OF RADIO DIFFUSION FOR THE INTERNET RADIOS,

THE BACK MUSIC IN THE STORES, THE RESTAURANTS...

I don't think that is the website you were asking about. You probably meant WinMx, a filesharing peer to peer network, where users made movies, music and programs available to other users.

WinMx is no more. It was put out of business 3 years ago, on September 19, 2005, after receiving a Cease and Desist Order from the US Justice Department and the RIAA, for gross copyright infringement by its users. They went after the owner who had moved to some Caribbean or South Pacific nation to try to evade copyright infringement prosecution. It didn't work.

As for what kind of trouble a user can get into for downloading copyrighted music and programs without paying for them, one only needs to Google for "prosecution of file sharers." The RIAA and MPAA are still actively prosecuting as many people as possible for having copyrighted files in their publicly shared folders, while also having file sharing software active on their PCs. The copyright infringement investigations are outsourced to Cyveillance and PSI, who are very - very good at locating computers that publicly share materials belonging to their clients.

Once a PC with unlawfully shared copyrighted files has been located, it's IP address is recorded and a snapshot of the folder with the files is taken. The RIAA, MPAA, or software company who's works were found will be contacted by the investigating agency. They will go to court and request a subpoena of your ISP, who will have to identify the customer who had the recorded IP address at the time those files were discovered. Your ISP must comply and you will be served with papers to appear in court, for copyright infringement. Your PCs may be confiscated by Law Enforcement officers for use as evidence against you in court. If found guilty as charged you may be liable for fines measured in the thousands or tens of thousands of Dollars or Pounds.
