Anybody know if there is anyway to get steel radio on the iPhone? I'm not having any luck. You would think it would since it is an mp3 player in itself, but I'm pretty lame at computer stuff. Thanks. _________________ Rog.

Since I'm looking at an iPhone,
I saw your post and did a little searching.
The above link looks plausible
but a little technical.
This also addresses broadcasting from your machine,
but will work for receiving a broadcast .pls.
Safari is the native web browser and uses QT media player.
Another common solution is to input the URL
in the open file or open URL option.
ie: http://xxx.xxx.xxx:8000 filename.pls
or something like that.
Key is to know the exact domain name or IP number
with the playlist filename.
Maybe it will help-

what is steel radio? if you send me the url I'll take a look too. if it is a streamed radio station, I'd say it will work great if you are on wifi and suck on the edge network... just not enough constant bandwidth to stream audio effectively. |

ahhh! thanks Wiz! hmm, okay... well, here is the scoop...
steel radio uses what is called shoutcast which is wonderful.
There are three groups of people making shoutcast clients for the iphone... all in pretty early 'hack' stages all with pretty big workarounds at this stage. The good news is the software developer kit for the iphone has been out a couple of months now and the protocols for development have been established...
I tried two of the products that exist a few minutes ago... they work, but unless you are pretty 'desperate' for it... I'd wait until just after macworld in january. I think there will be some mac-simple shoutcast client available that will allow you to do exactly what you want and possibly even inside itunes on your phone.
shoutcast works okay on the 'edge' network (at&t data side) but works great with regular wifi. There are also a couple of apps that 'record' steelradio and let you upload them to your phone in itunes that may be the best temporary workaround. |
