Now this was years ago but i always raised the first string by pulling it behind the bar with my little and ring fingers.Didn't have all those pedals we have now days.

I raise my 1st string F# a whole tone to G# to twin the 3rd. I use a lever...it kills the pinky if you use it often, especially if you're playing in G or lower on the neck.
Note: I also (on the same lever) raise my 2nd to match the 4th. Now, you get an especially cool sound bringing up the first two strings to match 3 and 4th. You hear it on Country stuff all the time.
