In our local paper there was an article saying Billboard "musicochartographers" have determined that the most popular hit single of the last half century was "The Twist," by Chubby Checkers. In descending order, the others were:
2. "Smooth" - Santana
3. "Mack the Knife" - Bobby Darin
4. "How Do I Live" - LeAnn Rimes
5. "The Macarena" - Los Del Rio

I'm kind of surprised at the Santana and LeAnn Rimes songs. I guess this is world-wide? Is there anyone who reads Billboard that can tell us how they arrived at these songs?

I remember hearing that the most played single of the 20th century was "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers.
And yeah, Bobby Darin was the man.

Nothing by Elvis or the Beatles?

BTW, Dick Clark once told Bobby Darin that singing Mack the Knife would be a huge mistake, and that he should stick to songs like Splish Splash instead.

Chubbs "The Twist"? Yeah, I can see that one.

The rest of those song picks border on the ridiculous, IMHO. Oh Well

That's why I am wondering how they calculated this, Donny. Maybe they are using international sales we are not aware of - inexplicable stuff like the French love of Jerry Lewis. Confused

Well, he did make a major contribution to rock and roll history. He gave us Fabian. Whoa!

Dick Clark was in the elevator with me at the Hermitage Hotel during DJ Week.
Wow! I think I was 16 and he was a hottie! Smile

Laughing That must be it! "How Do I Live" by Rimes is a nice song, but it's got nowhere near the strength, nor the legs of Celine's "Power Of Love". I have to agree with the Righteous Brothers' "Lovin' Feelin'" pick; that's certainly more popular, and has sold more, than anything by Santana. Like Celine's song, it too has legs. If you wanted a modernish rock number to replace "Smooth", the Dominoe's "Layla" might be a good choice. I hate the song, but I seem to hear it in one form or another every other day. Lastly, like Mike, I kinda wonder if there ought be a Beatles song in there, and if there was, "Something" wopuld probably win out.

So that's it...my "5", in no particular order, are:

The Twist
The Power Of Love
Lovin' Feelin'
Layla
Something

None of these is a favorite of mine, by the way, because I've tried to be objective. My own personal "most popular" favorites aren't listed. I also should say I appreciate what Darin did as a singer, but his stuff's really seldom heard nowadays. I might catch "Mack" once a year on an oldies station. But the Chubb's "Twist" is still heard every week, it's just a "fun" recording.
