At .049, at fret three, he drops the 10th string a half tone while keeping the 5th string raised a full. Is this what you hear?
Because of other things I think I heard on this CD I eliminated my 10th string raise and put a full tone drop on pedal 3 along with a half tone drop on 9 and kept the 5th string raise a whole tone. Makes a nice "drop" sound at the end of a slow phrase chord, pedal 2&3.
I put the E-F# on a knee.

Larry, I think Gary has the PF pedal on his vertical which would drop string 10, and perhaps he's playing string 2 lowered a whole step. |

Larry, perhaps try this;
The 4th string E sustaining is played as an open string.
The low notes are the 10th raised a whole played against the 8th lowered a half, at the 1st fret; followed by releasing the 8th lower, maintaining the 10th raise, and glissing down to the 0th fret.

OK Larry, more like this.....
The low notes are the 10th open, lowered a whole down to A, along with the 9th open, which is then lowered a half down to C#.
This is against the sustaining 4th, open.
I think.

Rob, I had thought of the second idea you had, would need to find a seamless way to do it. Gary has a lot of little positions he uses that sound complicated, but might not be. What a creative guy.

Larry, I know what you mean by 'seamless'.
If you're lowering 10 a whole on pedal C, which some do and I think you said you do, maybe you could get the high E on the second string raise, if you have it on a different knee than the 2nd/9th lowers..... |

I do raise the 2nd (&1st) on another knee lever. Lots of options for sure.

.....Or if you lower 5 and 10 a la 'Franklin' change, 10 goes down to A, 4 stays still, and just work the 9th string drop against that; I think that's the easiest. |
