Hello everyone,
Here is a little fun for you all! I have recorded some sound bites on my three weissenborn style lap slide guitars each built from different tonewoods.
From left to right in the picture below are:
"Annie" built by my friend and fine guitar builder, Taffy Evans. I have had this beautiful guitars for a few years now. She is a Cedar top, New Guiena Rosewood back and sides, Jarrah fingerboard and bridge with a Walnut head plate.
"Blackie" is one of mine and he is all Tasmanian Blackwood.
"Sassie" is my first build and she is Tasmanian Golden Sassafrass with Tasmanian Myrtle appointments.
If you go to this link www.myspace.com/ozziebluesman the three sound bites are posted there. The same tune was played on all three guitars.
Just for fun please have a listen and guess what guitars goes with which sound bite.
Recording chain was a Rode NT3 mic pointed at the 12th fret into a DBX pre-amp straight into the Zoom MRS4 recorders channel one. Channel two is a single coil, Fishman soundhole pickup fitted to each guitar during the recording process. These are not great pickups IMObut it did the job. I then balanced the volume of each channel on the computer, added a little reverb and saved the file as an MP3. Annie has a k&k bridge plate pickup system fitted and they sound wonderful IMO. As my two new guitar have no pickups as yet to achieve a good comparison Annie was fitted with the soundhole pickup also.
Hope you all enjoy a little fun.
Cheers

Blackie
Sassie
Annie
#3 is my favorite. A little warmer and mellower than the first two.
I liked the Little Wing cut too. Tuning? |

Alan, I've been anticipating hearing some clips of your finished Weiss builds.
They sound great... can't decide which I prefer!
To me the 3rd sounds "warmest" so maybe that's the cedar top, but in the IGS forum you say that's not the case! So maybe the bridge wood is influencing the tone...
I dunno, I'm really not knowledgable enough to do anything but guess at which one is which!
They all sound sweet to me, and Sassie looks the purdiest of all.
Each has a voice of it's own ( which is most desirabe imho ) ... maybe one suits mellow & lush chordy tunes & another suits driven fingerpicky rags... let the tone show you the way!!
Anyhow it's sure going to be an enjoyable journey of discovery as you explore the tonal nuances of your wonderful creations!
It'll be interesting to hear how each wood "breaks in" over the coming months... |

Ok the guitars where:
Annie (sound bite 1)
Blackie (sound bite 2)
Sassie (soundbite 3)
Thanks Mark for your thoughts.
Tom I was expecting too much of the forum members to try and pick the guitars. The post was ment to be some fun and not a competition. Thanks for your interest and thoughts mate!
Steve You are right the last clip is a much warmer sounding guitar. When I recorded it I had to cut the volume 2 db to match the output of the other two.
The tuning for "Little Wing" is DADFAD minior tuning. Very soulful sound!
Chris Yep they do have all different voices. It is so easy to hear live. Not so easy on a MP3. I have experimented with different tunings on all the guitars. Annie is best in Open D no doubt to me. Blackie be Open C and Sassie E or maybe Eb.
I will be recording a few tunes on all guitars in different tunings over the next few weeks. A friend of mine is going to host the files for me so stay tuned.
Cheers

Side 3 was the best sounding - warm and mellow which I prefer.
Side 1 - Blackie because of the hardwood more brightness.
Side 2 - Sassie
Side 3 - Annie because cedar being a softwood would produce a more mellow sound.
Beautiful guitars and a nice job on representing them.
Aloha,

G'day Don and Ben. Thanks for your comments. I have recorded Blackie and Sassie tonight and when I get the files to MP3 I will upload in a post for you to have a listen. I borrowed another condenser mic so this recording is all acoustic. Stay tuned. Thanks again for your interest.
Cheers
