Last I knew, Wally was still in the Orlando Florida area. I don't know about any recordings. |

Here's another Wally Murphy fan. I used to love his sets at ISGC, he always had a great band and polished arrangements. Great player. _________________ Darvin Willhoite

Also a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored Rose S10, named the "Blue Bird". Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also have a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks, and a showroom condition Sho-Bud Super Pro. |

If I knew how to reach Wally, I would attempt to gain permission to post some video of him from the ISGC, many years ago. It is great stuff.

I gotta couple of his albums somewhere. While he was far from the best technical player out there, I felt that he was great fun to listen to and extremely unique in both style and choice of material. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. I saw Wally a couple of times in St. Louis, and I've got one of his albums, "Flying Fingers". It's got some of the fastest, cleanest, chord work I've ever heard. |

Try the DOG TRACK BAR on Hwy 17-92 in Longwood Fl. Just North of Orlando. Herby Wallace might know for sure. |

I hope Bill finds him and gets permission to show his tapes of Wally. I was present at most of ISGCs when he performed and they were something else. My strongest memory is talking with him after he performed his patriotic medely ending ith the National Anthem. He said he was really blown away when he looked up and saw the whole crowd standing and saluting or hands on heart. my favorite version of asleep at the wheel was with wally murphy. i much prefer his modern ass kickin swingin steel playing to the older more boring 'traditional' non-pedal version. |

I got personally aquainted with Wally many years ago when he was touring with Asleep At The Wheel and was here performing with them in Portland, Oregon. I went to see them and afterwards, I hung out by the stage to wait for Wally to come out and tear down his rig. We talked for a while and I asked him how long they were going to be in town. He told me they had a day or two before going up to Seattle, so I invited him over to my house to barbeque a couple of steaks the next day. I went to his motel and brought him back to my place and we had a real nice time getting to know each other. He even showed me a few of his favorite licks, as I was just learning to play pedal steel at the time. That evening, I took him out to a couple of clubs where he sat in on steel!! He really turned a lot of heads, as I'm sure you could well imagine. I'm sure a lot of folks were thinking "who is this guy"!!! The next time they were in town to play, he called and got me, my now ex wife (and her girlfriend) in for free. After the show, I think the four of us went out bar hopping! The last time I saw him was at the St Louis convention several years ago and he played great as ever! I believe at the time he was living in St Louis but I'm not sure if he still is there or not.

Wally Murphy and his brother the late Big Jim Murphy both Great Steel players!
I asked about Wally a few years ago and was told he was in Florida working for an Auto dealership.
He sure was a fine steel player and I still have my copy of his L.P. titled "Flying Fingers!"

Hey Guys
Thanks for the replies.
He seems to have disappeared beneath the radar. The two Murphy' were high on my 'wow' list. Wally in particular was certainly an 'off the wall' player, and never ceased to surprise and amaze.
Didn't he do a version of the William Tell Overture ?

Hi Barry - he certainly did, along with the theme from the film 2001 - A Space Oddessy. Certainly a player who has gone down his own particular road _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. I had the pleasure of meeting Wally Murphy at the Saddlerack in San Jose in 81 or 82. He was playing with Asleep At The Wheel. I had just bought a brand new Dekley single 10, and was thrilled to see he was playing a beautiful Dekley D-10. As others have said, he was very friendly and generous with his time. I have often wondered what ever became of him, especially since he is rarely mentioned here on the forum. I did not realize that he was brother to Big Jim, another one of my early favorites. If true, that family certainly had steel in the blood. |

Steve, the Dekley that Wally had was a D-11 that I custom made for him. |
