I'm on vacation in SF till the end of the month and would love to catch some good pedal steel while I am here. Thanks for any recommendations.

Wow you Euorpeans sure do get lot's of vacation!! I am envious.

If you stop by to see any of these, make certain you tell them I sent ya!

Here are a few suggestions:

Dave Zirbel, a very fine player, is playing with Dave Alvin/Dave Gonzales and the Hacienda Brothers at Slims in SF Friday night.

Rancho Deluxe has several shows this weekend, tomorrow night at Amnesia on Valencia in SF, Friday at Peris in Fairfax, and Saturday night at The Riptide in SF. I think Joe Goldmark is playing with them, though it may be someone else. You can connect with them through www.myspace.com/ranchodeluxe.

I am playing a Sunday afternoon gig in San Jose at The Coyote Stage Stop, 1-5PM. If you want more info send me an email.

Have fun in one of the best citys in the country, if not the world! Be certain to go to the Farmers Market at the Ferry Building, I think it is Sat and Sunday mornings. Eat to your hearts content!!!!

Cheers

That sounds like an amazing show! I wish SW air still had 45$ weekenders from Seattle to SF Or I would be there.

I'll be seeing our good buddy Dave Zirbel playing with these folks tomorrow evening, down the road from me in Santa Rosa, at the Last Day Saloon.

With Dave Alvin joining in...

that's a lot "Daves" on stage at one time... :whoa:

Yes, too many Dave's! When Dave Alvin would call a solo at rehearsal ("play it Dave") of course Gonzales and I both started playing! :\ And coincidentally the other steel player's name that filled in for the mighty "Dave" Berzansky was Dave too! Maybe that's how I got the gig! :D

Dave Alvin is only on the California shows. We pick up a drummer and Dave A's guitarist Chris Miller in Portland to finish the mini tour. Other friends of the band will be sitting in at different times. The tour is a tribute to The Hacienda's Chris Gaffney who recently passed away. Part of the money made on the tour is going to Gaff's family, probably to help pay off the medical bills.

The shows will probably be a little loose, but fun.

Steve, I also need a roadie. What do you think? :D

Back to the topic:
Wayne the Train Hancock is playing at the Mystic Theater in Petaluma, 1 hour north of San Francisco on Friday the 8th. I think he usually carries a steel but I'm not certain.

Dave, I'd be happy to roadie for ya, but how the heck do you set that contraption up anyway?

I'll be happy just to have someone carry the stuff!

More North Bay steel possibilities: Asleep at The Wheel will be at the Rancho Nicasio on August 23 and 24. Again it's about an hour north of the Golden Gate Bridge and I don't know if they are carrying steel.

Big B and The Snake Oil Saviors are in Point Reyes on the 30th. They are a swing/ boogie woogie band with steel and horns. They usually have David Phillips on 10 string non pedal unless he's out playing with Peter Rowan.

Dave Gonzalez only allows guys named "Dave" to play steel in his band! have a great tour Dave Z. i know it's gonna be fun.

Wayne the Train will most likely have Anthony Locke playing steel. Anthony's a wonderful young player with lots of great ideas drawing from his extensive study of swing and hawaiian styles. he's the real deal.

If you get a chance to see Joe Goldmark, you won't be sorry. He's even better live than on his CD's.....if that's possible!

Brother Dave Zirbel acquitted himself extremely well last night in Santa Rosa.

I highly recommend anyone within a not unreasonable drive of these remaining shows in Nor Cal and the Northwest, get your butts on down to the venue!

I'm on lunch break, don't have time to write a full report, but it was a fantastic show, and my wife and I got our money's worth big time. And a fine tribute to Chris Gaffney, some great stories from the stage.

Charlie Musselwhite, who lives nearby, and was playing his annual free concert on the Town Green where I live, came by after his show to enjoy the concert. I was hoping he brought some harps and would sit in, but he was content to hang in the audience.

There are many complaints on the Forum about the steel not being front and center with both live acts and on recordings these days, but that was not the case last night. Dave had his ZB set up stage left, and though he wasn't center, he was definitely front, and really got to show his skills.

He was set up in the exact spot where Sneaky Pete played for us a few years ago in his last gig in the area, with Burrito Deluxe. I told Dave that some of that Kleinow vibe was rubbing off on him! I also told him that while he was busy concentrating on his playing, and looking down, as steel players must, that he missed dozens of grins and smiles of approval from the other Daves: Gonzalez and Alvin. They were absolutely loving his playing - there was a lot of "call and response" interplay back and forth on the copious instrumental breaks.

I'm really happy for Dave - he is a fine steel player, a humble guy, and a true gentleman.

This music was the real sh*t!

I will be playing Saturday night Aug. 16 at the semi-fabulous Hotel Utah on Bryant St. in San Francisco with Crooked Roads Band. Our guitar player cannot make that gig so I will have all the solos...
