For some of us, this is getting more and more difficult with the passage of time....but I was hopeful some of you might be able to recall one or two events that were particularly humorous or uplifting.
The Jolly Cowboys were in the Pacific Coast Towne of Tillamook, Oregon, home of Tillamook Cheese and a very large WWII USNavy Blimp base, in about 1953-56. Arkie always took the band out to eat when we played out of town, so "FREE FOOD" on top of UNION SCALE ($14.95) for a Saturday night was a joyous treat. We all felt very 'impotent'!
Mike Quanstrum, age 16, was without doubt one of the finest lead guitar players I've ever heard, bar none! This was his first time "BIG TIME GIG" and he'd never 'toured' with anyone and was thus unfamiliar with group etiquette and such. We all placed our orders for the evening meal and then drifted in to the wash room to prepare ourselves for this feast of kings.
While there, our meals were served and as we sat down to eat, one of the band members noted "Mike's" absence. Mike was sorta poor and at times bedraggled and most likely believed he'd not get to partake in this delightful feast.
Everyone started to grab a fist full of hamburger or fries when another fellow in the group shouted out "Somebody's taken a bite out of my burger!!!" The same discovery was made around the table. At this point it was noticed that Mike was outside the restaurant, with his face pressed up against the glass........laughing and having a ball.
He'd managed to take a huge bite out of everyone's sandwich, a handful of fries from each basket and a big slug of milk shake from everyone's drink. Fortunately, he did escape a lynching.
Can any of you folks recall similar happenings when traveling with your group? |
