I just got a Sho Bud 9 given to me. It was made in Madison. I plane on getting it all put back to original condition. Does any one know what the tuning was on these 9 strings? Terry

I am sure some old timers will chime in here but I think that the 8 string tuning added an E somewhere, making 9 strings. I am not 100% but it might have been Jimmy Day and at about the same time Buddy added the top chromatic strings, which are common place today. Something would of had to been dropped but I am not sure what it was.

As far as I can determine, the original eight string E9 tuning was E to E covering two octaves, same range as a standard guitar. When the middle E was added (and later the high G#) one (or two) of the low strings were removed. With a nine string neck you could have one of the low strings back. I believe all of this was taking place before chromatics. On the C neck, my guess would be remove the 10th string.

Of course, this is all conjecture. Maybe someone who was there will chime in? Calling Al Udeen!

My D–9 Sho-Bud with 6-Pedals was tuned:
E-9 - f#~B~D~E~F#~G#~B~E~G# w/3-pedals.
C-6 - F~A~C~E~G~A~C~E~G w/3-pedals. It still had the Perminent-set-up changer, but; I don't remember the C6-Changes! The E9 changes were standard: (As of Fall-1960)
