According to a Mercury Records listing of JERRY BYRD's record releases........
"STEEL GUITAR RAG" was his 5th release for that label. It was backed with "PANHANDLE RAG". |

Ray,
There were only 2 Jerry Byrd cuts on the site. "Panhandle Rag" was the other. If you haven't gone to the site yet, you might really enjoy it. Lots of Big Band music, and to my extreme delight, Ammons and Johnson Boogie Woogie tunes that I'd never heard before!

Jerry's version of this tune stands the test of time
well because we have so many other players' versions
to compare it with. It is a tour de force of the
Byrd style. Notable is how he plays the signature
"deet deedle dee durl" out the closed E position, and
when you disect that phrase, it isn't even what you'd expect at first casual listening. _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Fender Twin Tone Master, Session 400, Harlow Dobro, R.Q.Jones Dobro |

|
|
If you're referring to the first four notes of the tune, WHERE do you pick them and on what fret and strings?
I was "originally taught" to pick them right there on the fourth fret; E position, starting with the 4th string.
I've learned later that that is NOT correct.
WHAT SAY YOU? |
