I have a Dell notebook vith Vista. I recently went wireless and now I can't use youtube. It keeps asking me to downlpad the latest version of Adobe Flash. I've done it several times now with no improvement. Anyone have any ideas? It worked fine before I went wireless.

Just an idea; Flash requires full administrator privileges to install into the system32 directory and your browsers. Did you elevate your privileges when you upgraded to the latest Flash and did you go to the Adobe Flash Player web pages and verify that you have the latest version of Flash?

Wiz,

I went diectlty to the Flash site and downloaded it... again. I have no idea what you mean by elevated administrator priveleges. I'm the only one that uses this computer.

Everything worked just fine before I went wireless.

RC;
First off, go to the Adobe Flash Version page and see if your version is reported as 9.0.124.0, which is current as of now. If you see the version number followed by some details about it - Flash is enabled. If the version displayed is less then the above, you will need to try updating again.

Sometimes the only way to get a good Flash update is to manually perform the process. Here is how I do it, using a Windows XP computer (I hope the same holds true for Vista).

  • Open My Computer
  • Open your C Drive
  • Drill down to the C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash sub-directory
  • Find the file named FlashUtil9f.exe and right-click on it, then from the flyout options menu select "Run as (Administrator)," inputting your Administrator password if asked and if you have one set.
  • A box will pop-up telling you if there is a new version of Flash available, or not.
  • If a new version is available click on Install Now.

There are some things that absolutely require more privileges than a standard (Power) user can allow, both in XP Pro and all types of Vista. That is for your own protection. To install drivers, or Flash type applications, you must run the installers with elevated privileges, using the right-click option: Run As Administrator.

You're welcome RC! I have to do this everytime I update Flash, because I operate as an XP Pro Power User. This is about the same as a Vista Standard User.

Just because you are the only person using the computer does not mean you have full control over it with your regular account. Vista forces you into a Power User status, which allows quite a lot of leeway for installing many programs and updating them. It, like XP, does not allow a Standard (Power) User to update, install, or delete any file that does things requiring administrator level privileges.

The right-click Run As option was introduced with Windows 2000 and continues today, in Windows Vista. It allows one to escalate one's privileges, by taking certain steps.
