I am not sure if you are telling me you lost your email on the Windows 98 computer, or the XP computer.
The next thing I would need to know is what email client (application) you used to send and receive email.
Email is specific to login identities. If you gave the computer to your daughter and your old email messages were still on it, but you are now trying to access them from her identity, they won't be there, unless her login is the same one you used. You would have to get to the classic Windows login box, then type you user name and password, to login to your old identity and accounts. Your email should be there when you open Outlook (Express).
Regarding Win 98 logins: The above information only applies if your computer was setup for individual profiles, desktops and settings, not where everybody shares the same desktop and settings. You would have to login via the login screen to get your old (hopefully saved) messages in Outlook (Express).
If you are using web based email, I have no idea what happened to your messages, unless your email host deleted them during routine upgrades. ;( _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

My provider was cleaned out and was in the same condition as when recieved. I have no clue as to where this email has gone..My email provider is Pen Tel Data and have called them and they have no solution, I'm able to get on Internet Explorer and nothing else..Wiz there were no upgrades executed..the laptop was bone clean when I gave it to my granddaughter..

So, all of the email messages were on the XP laptop you gave to your daughter? What name did you click on at the Welcome Screen, to login to the Windows XP desktop, from whence you sent and received the missing email?
What name is your daughter using to login to her Windows XP desktop?
Here is a roundabout way to locate and export your old email messages. Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View. Set the options to display hidden and system files and folders and to not hide extensions of known file types.
Now open the contents of your C drive by double-clicking the C drive icon, then on "C:\Documents and Settings." When that folder opens you will see all existing user accounts listed as folders, by name, including some system accounts. When you first used that computer you had an identity that was used to browse and do email. It has a name. If you never created a personal identity account it may be named "Owner" or "User."
When you identify the folder representing your previous user account drill down by double-clicking on folders, until you get to the email storage location. The general path to follow is as follows:
C:\Documents and Settings
(Your Previous Identity folder name)
Local Settings
Application Data
Identities >>>
There will be one or more sub-directories there with names beginning with a { then a 32 character name, then a }, like this example: {0A965C0D-A606-4FC7-9038-7F808D279358}. Open each of these and drill down to the last folders that can be opened, under "Outlook Express." The contents at the end are email folders and messages. Inbox.dbx is the saved "inbox" messages. If you had special folders they will be listed by name.dbx.
Set the folder View Options to Details. This will show the last modified dates for all files and folders. Use this to identify the probable files you are seeking.
Once you see the desired email archives you need to copy the path to them from the address bar in the explorer window and save it in a Notepad txtfile, which you would save in a place accessible to all users: like C:\PathToEmail.txt.
Open Outlook Express from the identity you want to use to view these messages. Click on File > Import > Messages. Follow the Wizard prompts until you get to where you input the location of the message store. Either paste in the path you copies from the address bar, or use the Browse button to drill down to that location again. When you are there the OK button till become active. Click OK to begin importing all messages from that message store, into the Outlook Express email client you are using to do this.
I hope this helps! _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

My previous message pertains to Outlook Express email only. Outlook Express is what is known as an "Email Client." It is a stand alone desktop application for sending and receiving POP email. If you used any other email client, or browser based email, I cannot help you.
Also, if the previous identity was deleted all messages are probably gone, but it is worth a try to follow my previous directions (if you used Outlook Express).
In the case of web browser based email, all messages are stored on the hosting company's email server, not on your hard disk (except for AOL or equivalent). If, for instance, you used Hotmail through Internet Explorer, all messages are stored on the Hotmail servers. If you login to your Hotmail account from another computer, using your correct credentials, and your previously saved, or not deleted messages are not shown, assume they were deleted from the server by Hotmail, etc. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum
