Kay sent us "A String Of Pearls" and "Stand By Your Man"!
A String Of Pearls
Quote: |
Here is an arrangement for steel guitar, from an original part written for saxophone, of the lovely Glenn Miller tune "A String of Pearls". This once featured the famous trumpet solo by the Bobby Hackett. Bobby Hackett was an ace trumpetist/cornetist who had a bad lip and so was offered the position of rhythm guitarist in the Glenn Miller Band. Starting out on lap steel, I found the continuously required forward and reverse slants cumbersome (my own limitations!) and found the 1-3-5b-6 sound that I was seeking an easier fit on the pedal steel C6th neck.
Key of Eb/C, played on MSA Classic XL pedal steel, C6th neck.

Stand By Your Man

This tune, interpreted here on lap and pedal steel guitars, took Tammy Wynette to world super-star status. It reached #1 on the US country charts in late 1968 then crossed over to the pop charts (peaking at #19). It reached #1 in the UK pop charts when finally released there in 1975. The title of the tune was famously quoted by Hillary Clinton in a TV interview during the little bit of something that Bill once got involved in.
Played here on West Coast C6th lap steel and MSA Classic XL pedal steel E9th neck. Key of A |

Just discovered that there is another thread on this forum entitled "Bobby Hackett and Hawaii Swings". I would like to know if there is a steel guitar/big band version of "A String of Pearls" on this album, or any other....I found it to be a lovely tune for steel.
The only other reference my research has come up with is a Canadian band called "Prairie Oysters" who have a greatest hits collection called "String of Pearls". Come to think of it, an apt name for an album from a group so named...And here quote, "Founding members Russell deCarle, Dennis Delorme and Keith Glass are still very much in evidence, with deCarle's distinctive vocals and Delorme's steel guitar continuing to give the band its signature sound."
Would anyone have this steel guitar recording or have their own rendition of this lovely tune....?
Kay
PS: The orchestra players and accompanying steel guitarists used to dress very formally in coat tails and bow-ties during the "Big Band" era. |
