I have some copedents I have created using WordPerfect version 9.0. I do NOT have Excel spreadsheet software. Would to Jesus I did. But WP came with my computer and that is all I have (that I know of) to make copedent charts using color and with grid lines.

I have tried everything I know to post these copedents on the forum. Everything I try fails.

Can anyone advise me of a simple way. I will buy a lessor expensive software, but I have NO need for Excel other than to do this. So it would not be worth my while to go that route.

Any one?

thanks,

c.

I can think of two good options for you.

1 - Download and install the free PDFcreator utility. This program installs a printer diver, which doesn't actually print, but instead saves the file as a PDF. Thus it allows you to create PDFs from any application that supports printing. Then you can just upload the PDFs to the forum.

2 - Get OpenOffice. OpenOffice is a free replacement for Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access). It doesn't have all of the features the Microsoft products do, but unless you are a real power user it probably has all the features you'd use. OpenOffice can save files in either its own file format, which is quickly becoming a commonly supported standard, or in native Microsoft Excel format.

If you can get them to display the way you want them to in Word Perfect, just use CutePDF to print them. You will then get a pdf file that you use to display here if you have a file hsoting service. Or just send the fiel to me and I will host it for you and post the link in the Forum.

Below is the way to do it. If you have used spaces to align everything, Wordperfect is ok, just copy and paste in between the tags shown below. If you have used the Tab key, then you should replace them with spaces. Bear in mind, in the posting window it will not look properly aligned. In the actual post, it will be properly spaced. Try it in a test post first.

Code:
Guitar tab or tuning charts
To add monospaced text within your message, surround your tab or chart as shown in the following example.
[tab]
1   E   .015
2   F#  .013
3   D   .017
4   B   .019p
5   A   .022w
6   F#  .026
7   D   .036
8   C   .042
[/tab]
In the example lap steel tuning above, the [tab] and [/tab] BBCode tokens convert the text between them to a monospaced font. They also keep multiple spaces from collapsing into a single space. Note that the [tab] BBCode was added by b0b specifically for users of The Steel Guitar Forum - it won't work on other phpBB systems.
When composing tab or tuning charts, it's often useful to pre-format your chart using Windows Notepad. Don't use the tab key of your keyboard to insert spaces - use the spacebar instead. When you're finished composing your text in Notepad, copy/paste it into the text entry window of your Steel Guitar Forum message.

In Windows Notepad, use Ctrl+A to 'Select All' and Ctrl+C to 'Copy'. Then switch to your web browser, and click your cursor in the message entry window. Use Ctrl+V to 'Paste' your text. Don't forget to surround it with the [tab] and [/tab] BBCode tokens.

Having Excel would not help. I have many copedent and tuning charts in Excel, but they will not transfer directly into the Forum with proper spacing. Neither will tables from MS Word.

As far as I can tell, there is only one format that transfers directly into the Forum. That is to use a word processor and do all the spacing in the chart with the space bar. Use one of the old typewriter fonts with equal letter spacing, like courier or elite. Don't try to use the table format of your word processor. Just do it in regular text format and visually space everything properly with the space bar. Don't use the tab key.

Once you have the table looking right in your word processor, copy and paste it into the Forum. Put "[tab]" in front of it (without the quotation marks), and at the end of it put the same thing, but with a forward slash (/) in front of the word "tab."

You can also transfer a chart as an image from Excel, or a word processor table format. But it has to be the right type of image file. The ones listed are: jpg, jpeg, pjpeg, gif, png, x-png. PDF is not listed and wont work, and neither will bitmaps. Put "[img]" in front of where you want the image, and "[/img]" at the end.

It seems to me this is a very inconvenient and cumbersome way to post copedent charts. The old Forum had a much more convenient way of doing this directly from Excel files and word processor tables.

I believe another way to do it is once you have the chart on your screen, hit print screen on your keyboard. If you have windows, bring up paint and click paste. You will now have a bitmap of your screen. I think the Forum will take that. If not you may need to make it a jpeg.

Thanks for all the suggestions:

1. I have windows but I do not have "paint". I used to on my old computer. Nor do I have anything close that I can find on my new computer.

2. I have new PDF software and I converted my files to PDF and it works great for the publisher of the book I wrote. But the forum does not accept PDF files, when uploading.

3. I worked on it for hours last night and today, using various suggestions. I have gotten it to work after a fashion, but it is not clear and the colors are way off. But I had to go to too much trouble to even do that. It took forever.

Click on this thread and scroll down to see what I finally was able to do.

I am not pleased with it, but I am too weary and perplexed to try anything else. So it will have to do.

Thanks again for all your suggestions.

One thing. I know how to post copedents using "tab", but I wanted to post entire charts with grid lines as in the link. Since I believe they are easier to read.

anyway Very Happy

May Jesus bless you all.
