How do you determine what is the best tuning for a particular song key ? I have a reso guitar tuned to E6 for 3 songs we do in E. While its nice to have the open strings for hammer-ons, pedal tone sustains, etc; its a disadvantage not being able to go below the nut and access all the notes that would be 2 frets down. You can go to the 12th fret and go down but then the whole range is different.
I'm curious how others determine your tuning at the nut vs song key. |

If you use A6 tuning, E will be at the 7th fret and you can go both ways from there. You will have a 4 chord at open and the 12th fret and a 5 chord at the 2nd and 14th frets. |

John - do you keep a seperate guitar for each tuning?
For now I'm sticking with E6 or E13 but I may experiment with A6 and B6 too. _________________ https://www.facebook.com/ggefell/ |

Greg; No particular reason at the moment, but; I have 1-T–10 and 1-D–8 and right now I have a different tuning on each neck.
3x10-str. = C6/A7, C-Dia., E9/13
2x8-str. = A6, E6/A M7
This could change in time! _________________ <marquee> Go~Daddy~Go, (No), Go, It's your Break Time</marquee> L8R, jb

A D6 tuning could work real well for songs in the key of E, especially the blues-y stuff. Gives you a nice set of hammer-ons and pull-offs. Plus you have the root chord position under the bar...
I stick with one tuning, with slight variations... so if something has to change it's usually the song key-- if only by a half-step-- and not the tuning. |
